  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN PRO SUPPORT

A related question for Ronin operation, any one know if theres some other form of wireless module other than Redlink available for Epic/Dragon, Some one mentioned there may be a switchblade module with 802.11 built in to it as the Redlink module is a little large.

Sort of related anyone have any views of the DJI lightbridge as a video link say up against a Parralynx transmitter ? looks like the lightbridge could be good. It may also be the control channel in Light bridge could be used as a control channel to trunk data over in to the camera via the control port ? Any one got any thoughts if this could work ?

Is there a Ronin dovetail clamp available same config that fits the top mount so Ronin can be used on a crane as a remote stabilised head ? I guess we can machine some up but would be good if this is available as a stock part.

I thought about the very same thing, but since Willis has hinted about a big range of accessories to come soon, I'm almost certain this will be one of them.

Hi, I have bought a Lightbridge to use with Ronin, but the cable to connect them, does not come with the Lightbridge, nor the Ronin, so they cannot work together, right now.

I have sent an e-mail to DJI, but still waiting for a response of when it will be available.

Using the Ronin with lightbridge not only let you have a video downlink, but also, as you said, you have control over it with more that 1km range in LOS. Also you could have more Lightbridge receivers to have more than one preview monitor.

Ok guys,

I did some more testing this morning trying to solve my issue with my tilt axis bearings being in a bind. If you read my earlier post regarding my tilt axis showing different balance when the camera lens is pointing straight up versus pointing straight down you will know what I am talking about. Basically when your tilt bearing are in a bind you can't trust any thing as actually being in balance. to prove this I loosened the vertical tilt balance lever on the right side of the gimbal (opposite side from the tilt motor) and I also loosened the two 3mm bolts that hold the pivot axis shaft into the vertical tilt arm. As soon as I leveled the camera and let go the camera fell back as if it was really heavy on the back side, which it was. So I loosened the camera plate via the locking lever and slide the camera forward to rebalance it. With the side vertical locking clamp loose and the pinch bolts that hold the support tilt axis shaft in the vertical shaft loose the bearings are not in a bind and the when checking tilt axis balance with these things loosened the camera will stay in any position that I leave it. Now to back track a little bit. I have a GH4 with the Rokinon 12mm lens mounted. Before this test with my camera balanced, at least I thought it was balanced and a tilt axis stiffness gain of 40 on the tilt axis I had no motor buzz in standard mode or briefcase mode, but when I flip the camera upside down the tilt motor would buzz like crazy. Now with the camera tilt axis actually in perfect balance and those clamps loosened I get no motor buzz in any mode. Also when I retighten the pinch bolts and relock the vertical tilt balance clamp I still get no buzz in any mode, but my camera is showing out of balance even thou it is in balance. Actually it probably is very slightly out of balance due to the fact that the pinch clamps and the vertical locking clamps are putting the bearings in a slight bind which means that the camera plate is being held slightly off of true center.

So what this means is that when guys say that their camera is in perfect balance on the tilt axis, it is as long as their tilt axis bearings are not in a slight bind as my are. If their bearings are in a bind then their balance can be quite a ways off.

Apparently may be some latency 80ms ? will be interesting to see if this is workable or not.

I have the same issue as Tito. Ordered the Ronin and Lightbridge together, and there's no cable to connect the two. How could this have been overlooked?
Called DJI support in LA, and after spending over 30 minutes on the phone, was told they can't help me, but DJI Ronin support would e-mail me back. Five business days pass, no response.
Not very pleased with DJI at the moment.

Yes Dave,

CINEMILLED has one available now: http://cinemilled.com/ronin-quick-plate/
And I am making few different types myself - more info soon...

Hi everyone,

Just received my Ronin yesterday and gave it a quick test-out, very impressed with the initial results even with a non-ideal balance. Just wanted to ask a question about the USB port mounted on the vertical portion of the gimbal near the battery, there is a USB port & CAN port I believe, I just wanted to know whether the USB port supplies power and could be used to power e.g. a paralinx arrow or whether only the USB port on the camera tray area can be used to do that?

I didn't find anything too clear in the manual about this either way, so just wanted to see if anyone had a definitive answer :)

No - the USB port on the main frame (near the battery) is only for connection to PC.
Only use the USB port in the break-out box bellow the camera mounting plate to power your accessories.

Hey Dave, I just found this:
http://cinemilled.com/ronin-quick-plate/

Looks like he has a Steadicam Adapter in the making, too.

They should have made it Arcaswiss compatible so that it could be mounted on tripods and such. This handlebar QC is the worst part of the Ronin and mine is poor fit. Basically it is too loose and needs a piece business card to make it tight. It should be upgraded to Arcaswiss std anyway.

No replies to mine or Tito's comment about lack of a Ronin - Lightbridge power cable...
What's up with that?

No conspiracies here - trying to find an answer for you. Patience please...

Some tests over the weekend. 5D3 as i was just out with the other half so wanted a simple camera.

Lots of pan wobble going on in a number of shots. Considering the gimbal was perfectly balanced im not that impressed.

If you are in a hurry - go with Cine-Milled.
My solution will only start shipping next month...

I'm not in a hurry and next month is really soon... Add me on your waiting list please ;)

Peter, I figured with the considerable number of Lightbridge/Ronin bundles shipped, this issue would have cropped up already. Has no one else had this issue? It's a pretty major one...
