  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI RONIN - independent review and in-depth test

Quick question guys: If using a zoom lens on the Ronin, once balanced you cannot change focal length correct? That would require a re-balance?

Yes. I balanced my camera with a 24-70 at 24. Once I push in to 70, the center of gravity and weight have shifted. Usually it's as simple as sliding the plate back if there is room, but a rebalance would be in order to prevent the motors from having to do extra work even if its a slight focal length change.

Still haven't put a 70-200 on the Ronin hah, anyone try this yet?

The motors are strong enough to deal with this. It is not ideal situation, but unless you are shifting massive amount of glass during zooming - you will be fine.
Best thing to do is to balance the zoom at its center position - that way the opposite extremes are not that severe...
Take a note of the power the motors draw when balanced and then see how they change when you zoom to the extremes.
In any case if you exceeded what the motors can handle (highly unlikely) - they will automatically shut down to prevent any damage to themselves - but I am yet to see this with a zoom and I have tried much heavier zooms then the 24-70. Haven't tried the 70-200 yet... ;o)

Let's all just take a moment to acknowledge that the case the Ronin comes in is terrible.

One of the latches failed on day 1. Then a couple weeks later, one of the wheels jammed.

I have since recut the foam to fit in a Pelican 1650. Because those are actually...you know...good.

Devin, this is a first instance of me hearing about this. Maybe you had a dud. I have been putting mine through hell and for much longer then anyone else due to the beta testing and I am yet to have any problem with the case. Similar cases for other products are an optional accessory and cost way over $500 USD. For DJI to include such a case in the already amazing $3K price tag is pretty incredible and a bold move if you ask me...

I would have recommended contacting DJI support for replacement case (or relevant parts) - but it seems that you have already found your own solution...

Depends on the lens & the gimbal. Our M10 & Helix will both handle sigma 16-35 1.8 without rebalance. M10 wouldn't handle 24-70mk2 don't know if helix can manage it.

Hey guys,

a big THANK YOU to everyone for this very interesting thread!

I'm going to buy a Ronin, but after reeding this thread I'm uncertain.

Do the Ronin-users after they made experiences recommend this tool? Do the auto-calibration with different cameras work reliable? How good is the firmware/are the motors compared to other rigs like Movi or BeSteady?

I had another gimbal already, SC:Newton, but I wasn't satisfied at all and sold it. I don't want to loose money again..

Thank you
Wolfgang

This is a film makers year!! Man I love RED & DJI..Drones, gimbals, Ronin, Dragons, sweet camera devices you name it. I have plans to make one hell of a film! Thanks guys for following your dreams.

For a lightweight setup when needed, I intend to mount a gh4 in the ronin, does anyone knows a mount that can take an iphone or ipad in the ronin top bar to monitoring the gh4??

Can someone please tell me if the Ronin (with the standard arms) works with a Viewfactor plate/AB Dionic battery in the back of an Epic? (main lenses Canon 16-35L or 24-70L) I hate using Redvolts and I intend to make fast switches between Ronin and tripod.

Ive balanced an Epic with the viewfactor battery plate and an HC dionic. I had Leica-r's on the front, which are a little smaller and lighter than the canons you're looking at, but I was able to balance with just about a centimeter of clearance between the Anton battery and the ronin stem when I tilted the sled all the way back.

Testing the Ronin with the Cinemilled Arm Extensions & the Steadicam Arm Post Adapter.
Red Epic Dragon with Tactical Top Plate, RT-Motion FF with one motor, Teradek Bolt Pro, Leica-R 35mm Cinemod, OConnor O-Box, & Switronix 130A 3-stud battery on the Ronin.
