  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Phantom 3

I have a gopro 3+, so I usually film in 2.7k medium without much fisheye at all. Just looked at the 4 black, and it seems that in 4k you can only shoot super wide, which is to bad, as medium really looks a lot better. Of course you can correct in post, but still nice to have it out of the box looking pretty flat.

However, with the Phantom 3, you have full complete remote control of your camera including resolution, frame rate, white balance, shutter, color profile, (including log) and more straight from your smartphone or tablet. Not to mention you are seeing everything in reatime with 0.2seconds delay, able to fly over 1.5 miles, recording onboard at 65Mb/s (same as Hero4), and best of all, with a 21mm lens with no distortion.
Is there a profile as flexible as GP's Protunes available for your camera?
I love all of the above and I'm sure 90% of Phantom 3 customers will be happy - but does DJI care about the 10% (professionals?) who want or need to start with the flattest profile and highest DR possible?
With Protunes, GoPro really acknowledged they cared about their product being used in professional settings and mixed with pro cams.
Another USP would be to add an even higher bitrate (100Mb/s), if limited by hardware constrains maybe only at least to 24p and 25p frame rates...

Last: Is their an option to ad a ninja star via HDMI out? Or would this be to heavy in the end anyways?

EDIT: Just because it fits http://cinescopophilia.com/gopro-cineform-codec-has-been-standardised-by-smpte-as-the-vc-5-standard/
Maybe I'm exaggerating the issue, but I think it would be great for filmmakers to know there was a pro-mode with the P3's camera.

Any tips for better exposure when flying low then lifting to a skyline shot since we don't have any third party graduated ND's yet?

I have found that under exposing a 1 or 1/2 stop has helped reduce artifacts, also make sure your shooting in log mode for easier color correction.

Been using a RageCams ND, does a good job of cutting light, but not too stoked on the lens flairs it creates. I have an ND coming from these guys today and will report back with the results. Supposedly they use the best glass, which also means its heavy and I might have to counter balance the gimbal with a lead sticker: http://www.snakeriverprototyping.com/p3-series-filters

Best order up some ND's ASAP, its amazing how much it reduces jello, artifacts, and the flicker caused by the props and overhead sunlight. I also suggest getting a lens hood for overhead sunlight, something I need to order up as well. Here is a link to a nice kit that includes one: http://www.gimbal-guard.com/#!product/prd13/4110283911/full-phantom-3-accessory-package

Whatever ND's you end up going with make sure they are spot clean, the camera does not handle flairs well if they are at all dirty.

Hope that helps!

Thank you. I have the polarpro set - their ND isn't near strong enough though for daytime flying.

We've just purchased a Phantom 3 to test out before making a decision on whether to invest in a larger drone capable of carrying more professional cameras.

Initial thoughts - surprisingly easy to fly BUT take the time to go through all the instructions and start with small test flights in wide open areas. We've only shot around ten minutes of video footage so far and to be honest our footage was not great BUT this is most likely down to us and we have lots more research to do. At 4K it feels like the camera struggles with the compression but 1080 50/60p looks a lot better in my opinion.

One thing to remember - if you are using these commercially, you need to be CAA approved (certainly here in the UK) and this takes quite an investment in both time and money.

Overall though, this is quite an amazing machine and I had great fun flying it :emote_happyhappy:

Got to look at some p3 test footage today and it had some flickering in grass and other high frekvensy details. Will investigate if lowering the incamera sharpening will stopp the strobbing. If not we hopefully have nds for the p3 which chould help the flickering to vanish due to motionblur.

Just want to ask what sharpening setting you use? Its not my p3 so i cant go throw the settings today.
Is it any other camera settings you recommened to change?

Edit: i did mean flickering and not strobing motion.

I wonder what luts your using for the log on phantom 3? Im mostly interested in a log2rec709.

Flickering is usually the sun coming through the props and making a pulsing flare. That's a lighting artifact rather than a camera one.
