EDIT: Updated the below Phantom 3 reel with a bunch more shots! Hope you all enjoy!

When the Phantom 3 was released I figured it was finally time to enter the multicopter world.

It truly is an amazing machine, so easy to fly, but most of all, SO FUN!

Been getting after it with one battery over the last week (P3 battery are hard to find right now). Experimenting with arial time lapse and hyper lapse. Thought I would share the results of the amazing flying craft. Would love to hear your thoughts. I am working on gathering river footage with the Dragon and P3 for a short film I am working on.

Perhaps we should make this a post your DJI P3 work thread?

Edit: changed drone to multicopter for less negative connotation.

love it amazing here is my test footage off my lake enjoy!!!

@DanielBrown,
The Phantom has come a long way since the 1st generation, glad you are loving the 3. Can't wait to see your short film when it's ready.

@MarkToia,
since you can be anywhere in the world, please stop by my office next time you are in Los Angeles, love to introduce you to the product and go in depth with you on camera details. You'll love the Phantom 3.

Both videos are impressive!

Good image quality - go pro or GJI camera.

Interested to know that too.
I actually thought the P3 only came with DJI camera...?
Since GoPro 4K protunes is like the action-cam recording standard now and many have GP4s in their kit, this is one of the two things holding me back from purchasing.
(The second is the upcoming 3DR Solo...)

I love it man the price and features are amazing just amazing!!!

I just got a phantom 2 myself. Once the 3 came out the price on ebay for a full kit with fpv became to good to resist. Did my first flight yesterday. So fun.

IMO there is rather quite a problem... such GoPro Hero series videoish/goproish crappy camera. In almost every piece of aerial footage I see made with these toys. I'm sorry...

E :-)

The DJI 4k camera is really quite impressive. It's no red, but it hands down blows the doors of of the Panasonic Varicam I shot something like 20 hrs of TV with. Won a few cinematography awards with the Varicam as well. I find it perfectly acceptable for what it is ;-)

Hi Willis, yes the phantom three is amazing. Managed to get one of the first in North America and recently took it to Japan and got some amazing volcano stuff with Peter Majtan. Have an inspire in Tanzania, and the stuff there is mind blowing! A quick sample from japan.

Downside is the codec is not holding up. It's fine for downsizing but not really for 4k. Hopefully that will change with an update. I don't mind paying for something better like prores or DNXHR, or a much better camera. But really amazing crafts!!

Straight out unbelievable what can be achieved by sth you can order at toy stores :)
Michael, this is the DJI camera, not a GP4, right?

If the Phantom 3 is the same as the inspire camera, from my tests the gopro 4 is much better, mainly due to the compression and the bitrate of protune vs djis flat image profile. In high detail scenes like city landscapes and buildings the Inspire camera created moire artifacts vs the a Phantom 2 with Gopro. The only advantage the DJI camera has - which can be seen as a disadvantage to some- is the "regular" 24mm low distortion lens vs the gopro fisheye. But for great image quality, gopro 4 all the way. The image quality is so good, that I can guarantee, in dailight situations, if not for the fisheye look, no one can see the difference vs a 2/3rds broadcast UHD camera.

@RichardLuke,
Modifying your GoPro with a 5.4 flat lens is a great idea, it still works very well with our H4-3D Gimbal for the Phantom 2.

However, with the Phantom 3, you have full complete remote control of your camera including resolution, frame rate, white balance, shutter, color profile, (including log) and more straight from your smartphone or tablet. Not to mention you are seeing everything in reatime with 0.2seconds delay, able to fly over 1.5 miles, recording onboard at 65Mb/s (same as Hero4), and best of all, with a 21mm lens with no distortion.

Absolutely Willis. I love the idea of the phantom 3. However the GoPro can run many different flat lenses, flat color profile in Protune and is also a stand alone camera
I do love that the phantom 3 has its monitoring and control built in. It's a crazy cool tool for the money.

Pop the lens cover, unscrew the stock lens with pliers covered in tape. Screw in a flat lens available on the net with your fingers. Focus with a HD TV to your liking. Shoot.

Note - some lenses require a mod like a backbone gopro or similar to work.

Hi Willis,

First, let me say I'm a big fan of your products, and I shoot a lot with your Drones. I'm actually currently on my way to Toronto, Canada, to speak about a work I did on your Phantom 2 and shot on a Gopro 3+.

https://vimeo.com/104840203

However, I must say either I had a Lemon to try, or something was wrong with the Inspire drone I tried. While it flyed wonderfully and everything was working as advertised, the footage, in 4K, when compared to my Pahntom 2 with a Gopro 4 Black, had artefacts in high detail areas. You state that both have the same compression, so what could I be missing here?

I was very disappointed with the image from the camera. Yes, it was passable, it was 4K, but the Gopro4 in Protune just presented a much superior image.

Cheers,

Sérgio

For all of you wondering, this was shot with the Phantom 3 pro that has the DJI 4k camera built in.

IMO I would shoot with the P3 camera any day over the over the warped fisheye go pro image. P3 cam has some artifacts for sure, but they are greatly alleviated by having proper 180 degree shutter (proper ND's). Also I just found LOG mode, I think shooting in this will help as well.

And the fact remains your paying $1300 for a 4k camera with a badass tiny gimbal that flys around and an be completely controlled wirelessly by your phone! Also the free DJI app that controls the camera is amazingly well made.
