Hey guys, just picked up a new DJI Phantom 3 Pro and was curious if anyone has any great samples of mixing the H264 4K footage with Red footage. Any info on settings or grading techniques used to make the match would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We have shot some stuff for our feature but haven't integrated it into our Dragon footage. Will definitely be paying attention to this thread!

Bueller?

So I've got our process for integrating the footage to about a 75% match, however in really complex scenes with lots of trees/shadows/etc there is a slight image "twitch" or flicker, especially in the shadows. I am sure this is being caused by the poor 60mbps h264 compression. Any tips on how to compensate for or mask this effect? Currently I am playing with a combination of neat video, re:vision deflicker and adding"film" grain. Any other thoughts?

It helps if you shoot with Sharpness down below -2. After that, you're on the right track. De Noise, add back film grain, and Unsharp Mask and that's about the best you can hope for (until the X5R comes out...I am quite excited for that one).

The Inspire and X5 combo is far more cinematic looking than the X3 or P3 Pro. It does not have the oversharpened look and you can use other lenses(I've used the 12mm, 15mm, 17mm, 25mm, 45mm) to give a more natural field of view rather than the ultra wide that is fixed on the X3/P3P. I shoot a lot with DJI gear and our RED Dragons and the X5 is the closest to matching. It has a very similar look to the GH4, and when in LOG can match a RED a lot better than a GoPro sensor(in the X3, P3P).

Wow guys, great stuff! Thanks for the info and samples!

So is the consensus to shoot at -2 sharpness and below? Many people seem to recommend -1, so that is where I have been shooting.

We can't wait for the X5R...however we won't be investing that kind of money until the FAA gets their shit figured out.

grading wise the go pro black4 (snowskeeting) seems to integrate better than X5?

best wishes and kind regards,
martin

Good eyes! but it's not a fair comparison unfortunately.

The Snowskeeting was graded by one of the best colourists around, and the weather was perfect. Still conditions and clear sky.

For the North Face job, the weather was terrible. Massively windy, throwing the drone around. The camera did not have a full set of ND's with it, so the shutter speed was wrong, and to top it all off... it was a pre-production camera, so things have changed since then.

We are flying the Alta now with Dragon for best results, and we have a new Inspire 1 with X5 ordered for flying in conditions not suitable for the heavy lifter.

.

Thanks for posting these. I can't find the native iso of the X5 - what ND's do you think you'd have needed to bring the shutter speed down to c 1/50th with a mid-range stop?

Just chiming in here:

The X5 is capable of stacking two filters. More and the gimbal won't be completely balanced. Essentially, it comes pre balanced with a dummy filter and the lens hood. So if you want to stack ND filters you would fly without the lens hood.

Personally I have been flying with a Tiffen 46mm .9 ND and a Tiffen Circular Polarizer with ISO at 400.

Thanks - much appreciated!

Sooooo...for the record you guys were totally right. -2 Sharpness really seems to take the compression flicker out of the game. Now I just need to figure out how to sharpen my "mushy" trees (lol) Any suggestions?
