  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Focus - *OWNER'S THREAD*

I think defining what you feel as delicate is a personnel feel / i will say this unit is very responsive
Hey guys!

I'm interested in this ff as a backup (or B-cam) unit.

I often use some old and delicate lenses but with a very smooth and light focus ring...

if the calibration torque is set to low is it really delicate when reaching the end stops?

Opinions from current owners??? ;)

Thanks!!!!!

Yeah generally speaking you're right but I meant if in its lowest calibration torque setting, it is delicate enough to not damage some older still lenses....

Thoughts?? ;)

better off finding 3rd party DJI has limited choices when it comes to actual gears / I have found their gears to be less than stunning. I have all 3rd party gears
Ah...also...

do you know if a thicker focus 0.8 mod gear to use this WFF with lenses having external focusing barrel with extreme travel (LOMO RF ANAs, Leica APO 100mm, etc etc) will be available from DJI or other third party manufacturers???

Thanks Marcel,

I meant the actual DJI Focus gear, not on the lenses... ;)

RT Motion and most WFF motors offer optional thicker gears but DJIO does not (currently?).

Personally, I would avoid the lowest Torque setting. On my DJI WWF, on the lowest setting only the Auto Calibrate works. The other two calibration methods do not function properly on lowest, but do work great on Medium and High.

If you have stiffer lenses...you can have the torque set to high, but adjust your rack speed to really low, which will help during both manual/automatic calibration!

hey guys! thanks for the replies!

I meant old still photo lenses with very light (cooke-like) and well lubed focus ring, but with fragile end stops.

So I just would like to know if I can use the automatic cal with low torque setting and succesfully calibrate these.

These lenses have a light enough focus ring that should not give "false" end stops to the auto cal algorithm,
but I need to know if the lowest setting for cal torque is REALLY gentle to the end stops,
ideally VERY sensitive and as soon as it detect a MINIMAL resistance,
it should stop and go the other way to find the other end stop (gracefully too! he he)

Try it and see...but I'd recommend doing a manual calibration if you're worried about your end stops.

Any any word on a thumb control solution for this? Also anyone know if the motor can be powered with the d-tap ports on the bottom of the ronin mx? Thx!

Does anyone have any thoughts on the RedRock wireless focus? I would really prefer the DJI system as I have lots of DJI stuff and really like it... BUT I need the thumb control and am not seeing any any options for that on the DJI solution. I've seen some negative things posted about the RedRock so just wondered what people thought. thx!

Stay away from RR. Had so many issues with it. Loud motors, range/torque issues, having to deal with the extra module outside of just the motor. DJI is far superior. No Thumbwheel yet, but I'd take no Thumbwheel over an unreliable, loud and clunky system any day of the week.

Another +1 for the DJI system. It feels and performs on a different level than the RR WFF. Still not as good as a Preston FIZ-3 or an ARRI WCU but it's also only $2,000. Unbelievable amount of value for the price. Plus, not having to mount an MDR is a life saver in lots of situations.

Get an RTMotion Latitude... Dude it's sooo sooo good.

you can thumb wheel focus and remote focus canon mount AF lenses too. Works SUPER!

I like my DJI focus too.

I was just looking at the Latitude. Looks awesome but really expensive, at least compared to the DJI. I know all these are cheaper than the prestons and arris...

Buy once cry once

I normally agree with that logic. However, you can buy 5 brand new DJI units for about the price of 1 used Preston Single Channel system.

Honestly, I've thought about this a lot and I'm still undecided on where I land. The 1st AC in me would absolutely love to own and operate a Preston, but the business man in me knows that he can make more money by having 4 units live in rental houses and keeping the fifth for my personal camera package.

I was thinking of buying one of these for pulling focus on our drones but the range is listed at only 330'. I am concerned that with all the other RF on the drone, that distance will be even less which won't work. Any thoughts or experiences?
