  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DJI Focus - *OWNER'S THREAD*

I just ordered my DJI Follow Focus from B&H.

Quick question since I have not received it yet. A number of people have mentioned that the included D-Tap have some weird tabs that need to be filed off before it fits into a standard D-Tap.

Is there anyway to power the unit without filing off the D-Taps? The reason I ask is because if it's not working, I have two weeks to return it to B&H but obviously if I file off the D-Tap tabs, I cannot return it.

Thanks for any insight.

You're welcome to try my P-Tap cables at Digital Film Studios - www.dfsla.com

Awesome Dan, thanks so much. Good chance I might hit you up next week. I'm a bit paranoid as there seems to be an above average failure rate with this product, but I heard if you get a good one you're golden.

As as for the Ronin P-Tap. There's no way to power the motor / gear portion without grinding down those tabs? So weird.

It depends on your batteries/plate.

its kind of a clever design if you have aftermarket batteries or plates which are "keyed" with the tab. All my Chinese batteries have this notch to protect from polarity reversal. I use real Anton Bauer plates, which are not keyed this way, with a wide variety of different batteries. For whatever reason my follow focus didn't have the keyed plugs which prevented plugging in, so never had that problem.

Some people are in complete denial that it's possible to plug a Genuine Ptap in reversed and blow something up. Of course, reality tells a different story on the battlefront we all face making movies.

The lentequip Safetap is a well executed version of the Ptap, a bit pricy for a connector, but saves you on the "fail" later.

That's really interesting Dan and something I did not know about.

I notice on most D-Taps there is the rounded corner side and the square corner side. So if I somehow plug in the D-Tap upside down by accident (get the round and the square size mixed up. Is that even possible?), the polarity can get reversed and damage the equipment?

That is definitely possible to do. Have seen it happen, and although some equipment is polarity reversed protected, not everything is and an over eager AC can definitely burn things up. I am in the process of converting all my Ptap cables to the safetap connectors, but I have to say that although it works with the DJI motors, the nature of a focus motor is that it draws different amount of current depending of what it's doing, resting, rotating slow or fast, so this makes the LED on the safetap light up like a Xmas tree when you rotate the remote knob. It works, but it's concerning me...

We've been pretty happy with our system and have not needed to file anything down as we are using real AB connectors. It is very important to make sure the rounded corners line up because it is possible for some people to force it in incorrectly. Not everybody passed the square peg round hole test in preschool.

How can you control the speed between A,B,C,D points? Rack speed. I have been changing the Rack speed from 5% to 95% but no results, the speed between A and B point still the same for 5% and for 95%.

Issues with new firmware. Finally updated to 1.4 from 1.3 hoping I allowed enough time for any kinks to be worked out. Also updated the motor and "radio". I haven't had issues before..and now I do. The motor keeps stopping after calibration. Pairing always says "Succeed!!", but after you calibrate it stops moving the motor. Anyone dealt with this? I got someone on the phone Thursday April 28th and we reflashed firmware and it worked for a day and now it's doing it again. HELP?!

Have you tried restoring both under the motor and general settings?

You could also try adjusting your rack speed setting down to like 10%...Run torque at max, Cali torque at max, Acceleration at Max, Speed at like Medium/50% (forgot what setting) and see if that works.

Yes I always exit back to the main screen after calibration. This just started happening after updating firmware..it's been fine for the few months previous. I've restored settings with no success and I'm not sure why setting rack/torque/etc. to different numbers would keep it from randomly stopping working? I've opened a service ticket and they haven't e-mailed me back yet so we'll see what they say this time. Really sucks they don't have a brick and mortar store in LA to take it in.

When you updated the firmware, did you update the motor firmware as well? If not, make sure you connect the motor to the controller with the Lemo cable and go through the app to update it.

I had something similar when I just got mine... Motors just did not move. upgraded the firmware and still nothing then (I think) I restored default settings and viola. Works as should. Have not had problems since then and used it a lot.

Yeah I've tried default settings and I did update the HU, Motor and "radio"..we hooked it back up to the App and it randomly will work, just hoping this doesn't pop up as it's on a feature now and would be a major hassle.

hello all has anyone found or hacked a thumb controller that can be used with this focus motor?

Hey guys!

I'm interested in this ff as a backup (or B-cam) unit.

I often use some old and delicate lenses but with a very smooth and light focus ring...

if the calibration torque is set to low is it really delicate when reaching the end stops?

Opinions from current owners??? ;)

Thanks!!!!!

Ah...also...

do you know if a thicker focus 0.8 mod gear to use this WFF with lenses having external focusing barrel with extreme travel (LOMO RF ANAs, Leica APO 100mm, etc etc) will be available from DJI or other third party manufacturers???
