  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

District 9

Except they rendered it in Mental Ray....

Not saying Modo isn't an excellent modeling and paint program. But... it's very limiting in what you can do with it. Not exactly the best comparison to RED.

Modo is more like the Canon XH A1 of cgi. Inexpensive, light weight and does somethings very well that a big camera like the RED might not be as well suited.

Anyone seen it yet?

If you haven't its a pretty damn entertaining film, I thought it was up there for my summer films of 2009...

POTENTIAL SPOILERS :) (Not sure if you count any of them AS Spoilers, apologizes, I'm not the best at reviews but just my thoughts)

Coolest stuff I thought was the documentry style that mix and matched with the actual film, it didn't distract from the film, at first I was sitting there and thinking 'please don't be like a news report the whole way through' but actually it turned out well, lots of cool stuff and nice story line,
There was some great camera work, especially the handheld stuff, acting was most definitely well done in terms of the documentary bit. As an experience it definitely made me feel that it was worth my money, the RED cam on this certainly did well, if it was used the whole way through, it looked good even with the 'degraded' sort of looking footage for the documentary all the way to the actual cinema-tics bit, there is a close up towards the end that just had me in awe as to the detail that was in that single close up compared to the others,

All in all, certain things did bug me, guns that you see the guys carrying, the ones in the trailer and movie do look rather fake, kind of like spray painted versions from Toys-R-Us... otherwise I think they did a pretty good job on the whole costume and props side.

I most definitely want to see the making of this though,

Just wanted to see what others thought of it, I'm still hanging out for Gamer though, which seeing the trailer today just made me want to see the thing in iMAX if its available :tongue_smilie:

Agree on all points except the XH A1 analogy. Modo is limited in many ways, but for what it does, it does very well. It's still one of the best modeling applications out there, at any price and has an incredible render engine with some of the most realistic motion blur and lens properties of any renderer. It's animation tools are still in their infancy, but grow with each release. I would like to see a more nodal and non-linear approach to their animation system and their surfacing is powerful, but the nodal approach in LW9 is a better method, IMO.

These days, I pretty much model everything in modo. Then I animate, surface and render in either Lightwave or with Maya + Mental Ray. I prefer XSI, but it's become too expensive and cumbersome and all my clients have dropped it like a hot rock.

Yeah I couldn't really think of a good analogy and gave up.... wait....

Oooo! It's like the Canon 5D MK2. It can create some really great images and takes some really great stills but has major limitations which prevent it from being used for motion pictures. :D

I saw it and almost walked out. I wanted to like it so much, but I thought the story was pretty lame.

IMHO, the lamest stuff was the "documentary" footage. I hate that stuff. That is like having someone doing extended voice over narration or having someone read title cards.

There were so many parts of the plot that I could say, "That was pretty dumb" and I would be contradicted here. That's the way it goes.

Why the desaturated look to the movie? What were the film makers trying to say? I didn't get it.

I wanted this movie to be a great. I could see the craft at work and I appreciated that, but the script was pretty lame.

I just saw this, and I am nursing the WORST headache ever. I've had enough of this fuckin shaky-cam, hand-held crap!! I was literally getting seasick in the film.

I did not like the film at all.
