Anyone seen it yet?

If you haven't its a pretty damn entertaining film, I thought it was up there for my summer films of 2009...

POTENTIAL SPOILERS :) (Not sure if you count any of them AS Spoilers, apologizes, I'm not the best at reviews but just my thoughts)

Coolest stuff I thought was the documentry style that mix and matched with the actual film, it didn't distract from the film, at first I was sitting there and thinking 'please don't be like a news report the whole way through' but actually it turned out well, lots of cool stuff and nice story line,
There was some great camera work, especially the handheld stuff, acting was most definitely well done in terms of the documentary bit. As an experience it definitely made me feel that it was worth my money, the RED cam on this certainly did well, if it was used the whole way through, it looked good even with the 'degraded' sort of looking footage for the documentary all the way to the actual cinema-tics bit, there is a close up towards the end that just had me in awe as to the detail that was in that single close up compared to the others,

All in all, certain things did bug me, guns that you see the guys carrying, the ones in the trailer and movie do look rather fake, kind of like spray painted versions from Toys-R-Us... otherwise I think they did a pretty good job on the whole costume and props side.

I most definitely want to see the making of this though,

Just wanted to see what others thought of it, I'm still hanging out for Gamer though, which seeing the trailer today just made me want to see the thing in iMAX if its available :tongue_smilie:

Watched it a few hours ago. Found it really entertaining. Red camera footage looked great. Loved the irony and the subtext. Effects blended well with the story. What more can I say without revealing story elements?...I will be recommending this movie to my friends. :001_cool:

The documentary style footage is Sony EX1/EX3 XDCAM-HD.

We shot the RED One footage with Cooke S4 primes and Angenieux zooms.

The human guns are all real weapons.

Hey Jonathan,

Great stuff. Was the Red used for a specific purpose i.e. FX plates, or was it widely used?

Love to know the percentage of Red when I talk about the film.

Aloha Jonathan,

Good to hear, didn't know that was the case,
The documentary style, does that cover from the interviews to the news footage?
What was that choice based on, like why EX1/EX3 over just shooting all with RED?

The majority is RED One, used for practically everything that is not documentary or CCTV look.

I can't be more specific as I have not seen the finished movie yet.

Awesome movie.

I saw it earlier today, loved the movie, Really nice Visual Effects... especially compared to G.I. Joe which I saw afterwards.

I didn't find the photography all that spectacular myself, It wasn't bad but for the most part I couldn't really point out what I thought was Red and what wasn't except for in the cases where it's apparently obvious.

Can't wait to check it out- but when's it going to come to Mexico City? Anyone care to send me a screener? I'd love to write up the story for it on RED somewhere....

Noah

It didn't do it for me.

I thought the story was weak and there was not enough audience connection with anyone except the male character.

I think PJ will take a critical hit on this one.

my two cents.

Are you talking about the Vektor CR-21's?

Those were real, even though they do look like Rayguns.

Why would this hurt PJ?

Because he produced it. He helped push the support for Blomkamp to direct a big movie (even though this was only a 30 million dollar film or so.)

But frankly, I don't think he will at all, the movie was AMAZING. The reviews so far are fantastic with "Universal Acclaim" over at Metacritic.

Everything worked, this is a classic example of a big action movie where the action and effects serve the story instead of the other way around.

Fantastic film, glad to see a Blomkamp film on the big screen.

Posted on the "Variety Review" section as well. Good film. But the print I screened (film print) was quite washed out. Jonathan, was that the film maker's intended look? What build were you at when this film was shot? Congrats on what looks like will be a very successful release.

Thanks Joel,

I would go with artistic intent.

Build 15, we had to keep cameras with build 15 for later pickups after Build 16 was released to ensure the material would seamlessly intercut.

According to early Predictions, it's already made back it's budget (the theater I was at today at 11:05 was PACKED, early showings are NEVER that full), which isn't hard seeing as how it was only made for around 30m, but still that's pretty great.

Do you guys know if you saw it, in digital or film?
