Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp's new movie, District 9, has received a very favorable review from Variety. You all should find this blurb particularly interesting:

"Lensed primarily on the Red-One camera, the film looks and sounds terrific, its seeming improvisation masking the obviously exhaustive planning required in all departments. The interactions between the aliens (a combo of f/x and old-fashioned prosthetics) and the humans are handled as confidently as anything in the "Transformers" movies and are arguably more impressive for d.p. Trent Opaloch's off-the-cuff shooting style."

Not a bad endorsement at all!

Just saw District 9. Good film. This was a film print. Not sure if it was this particular print or the look the film makers intended but it was very washed out. Does anyone know what build 9 was shot on?

Hi Joel, we shot the film on build 15 and did end up using a hot, bleached feel in the DI for a lot of the exterior shots.

Trent, didn't catch the movie yet but love the work you put into it (judging from the trailers).

Great job. I've been looking forward to this movie for awhile now.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. After seeing Public Enemy and seeing how they integrated all those different digital medias all the way down to HDV camera I was worried. Public Enemy looked like crap and I was pulled out of the story examining the technical mis-achevments.

Knowing that District 9 also used a flurry of different cameras I was worried but they pulled it off while making me laugh. Exploding humans and anti gravity pig accelerating guns bring funny tears to my eyes.

The only thing that I was slightly bummed about and it had nothing to do with the movie it's self. I went into the film not knowing a whole lot about it. I was under the impression from the trailers that it was going to be a some what low budget inde film that made it big and was shot with Red. After seeing the cool graphics and the never ending credit roll I know they made it for more then $99.95

What was the budget?

About 30 million. So significantly less than the average 60+ million of a studio feature, but not chump-change.

If it's any consolation, this was the Directors first feature film, and is based on his short Indie Film.

And the "HALO: ARMS RACE" ad for Halo 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUcreY0X33k

He's also directed a few ads, and another great shortfilm (Look up "Tempbot").

I wonder how much involvement Peter Jackson had in it? 30 million is pretty good after seeing how many VFX it had in it.

Impressive film. Solid, intreaging storyline. Incredible and innovative cinematography. I've seen it twice already. Word is spreading fast, the it's positive. This movie will make back it's expenses at least four fold

Also co-directed a little short that some of you might have heard of called...ummm..."Crossing the Line"

Makes sense for them to use RED for this movie.

Wow, where did you see that information?? I can't seem to find that mentioned anywhere. Very cool if it's true.

great movie

great movie

Ok I just saw this today and was really really impressed by this movie all around. Congrats to Neill and Trent for making a very original film that was a lot of fun to watch. I must say that I think it's one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in a long time.

I'm even more impressed by what I felt was really mature filmmaking that went into this film, especially knowing how difficult it must have been to pull off and at the modest budget.

Also, I completely forgot that it was shot on RED and only realized it just a few moments ago. When you forget about the format that a film is shot while you are watching it, is a testament to good work with capable tools.

No tripod, Steadicam?

I got dizzy, walked out and asked for my money back.

Sorry. Not my cup of tea.

You might wanna go get that checked out (the dizziness), this was well done in that style of shooting, very well done! I personaly loved the handheld visceral feel. Amazing work Neill and Trent. More than anything I LOVE the political and social statements mad in this film, thank you :thumbup1:

Saw D9 yesterday, film print. Great story, rich well developed characters, seamless effects.
Only $30 mil? Amazing! Very satisfying cheap (in the Frank Zappa sense) original sci-fi epic.
I liked the cinematography style a lot, it had the visceral immediacy of a news shooter in a war zone.
