District 9 Variety Review

No tripod, Steadicam?

I got dizzy, walked out and asked for my money back.

Sorry. Not my cup of tea.

A lot of people complain about this with this tyle of shooting. If you read a few reviews on cloverfield you'll see people have the same complaint.

But please if it makes you dizzy dont blame the film, if you get easily motion sick then its not the films problem. Great film. I believe Peter has been wanting to help this guy make a film for ages I'm pretty sure PJ mentions this guy in his book. Not 100% though.

I saw it last night, film print, but the projector was in focus for a change, it looked good. Color grade was on the drab side, but it carried the whole way through that way and blended the news doc footage with the action footage pretty well. Being a big sci-fi geek, I enjoyed it. Awesome movie overall. The FX work was pretty good, a few things jumped out at me as kinda odd.. I have some mixed feelings on the camera work. The cinematography was very well done for this style of shooting, but I think some of the shaky-cam was a bit over the top -- compare it to real-world warzone footage... it's just different. I felt some of the framing was a bit too restrictive at times, but I think that was the added sense of anxiety and claustrophobic feel the director was going for.

The story was good, but not great. A few of the plot devices felt a little forced. I don't want to post any spoilers here... yet.

Anyone who likes aliens, blood, guts, and a decent sci-fi story should defintely go see it. I'll see it again, I'd like to catch a digital projection the next time around. :thumbup1::thumbup1:
