  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

District 9 RED One

WELL, WELL DONE!

What can I say, I love these kind of movies! Like clover field and REC they really put you into the movie. It's just so dam awesome, all actions movies should be done this way, well Sci Fi films specificaly. Seriously, holy shit I'm so jelous I'm not the one who gets to say I wrote that or directed it or was the DOP.

Congrats to all who worked hard on this film. It was simply amazing.

Hi Trent,
Just watched the film...now one of my favorites. Just curious about the look of the film. It looks like you guys took a lot of saturation out of the image to give it a documentary look and feel, but did you guys also do that to blend in the CGI better?

We had a RED One in a crash box, the HF100s sometimes also got quite close to the action.

Jonathan
RED Camera Supervisor on District 9.

Ah, makes perfect sense then. I remember seeing an action shot inside a vehicle or something with some diamond shaped lens flares similar to the ones I used to get with my old HV20. The HF100s has similar if not identical optics. Thanks for the info!

RED1 is going to GET one more weekly box office in US this year with District 9 movie (now even with Sony Pictures Distribution ).

Early Weekend Estimates:

Aug. 14 to Aug. 16, 2009 Weekend

District 9' tops Friday boxoffice>>On track to top $30 mil on the weekend>>>

"The aliens of "District 9" landed with a dramatic win in the top spot at the North American boxoffice on Friday.

Sony's R-rated sci-fi tale, directed by Neill Blomkamp and bearing the imprimatur of producer Peter Jackson,

came seemingly out of nowhere -- although it did make a high-profile advance stop at the recent Comic-Con,

where it was enthusiastically received -- as it took in an estimated $14.2 million for its opening day in 3,049 theaters.

That puts it on track to rake in a weekend haul well north of $30 million."

Best movie of the year. Great job, guys. We now have a CLASSIC movie shot on the RED. Its going to get huge word of mouth--both the film and the camera. Makes me proud to own one. I liked the subtext of the storyline too. Its tough to make a thoughtful film with so much action. Blew me away. When someone does this for no money, it will change the world. A great first step! Kudos!

Saw the movie today, and overall enjoyed it. There were some things that you really had to stretch the suspension of disbelief, but it was balanced out by some fun characters, good action sequences, and CGI that didn't get in the way too many times.

The cinematography was excellent. I think Trent and his team did a great job with what looked to be some challenging shooting conditions.

I saw film projection, so I'd like to now go back to see it in digital projection. The projector's focus was a bit soft, so I'm curious to see how this plays on sharp, digital projection.

I loved the film (really!) but if I see another feature film graded like a mocha piece of chocolate with almost no color, I think I'll walk out. :-)

p.s. Don't even get me started on Book of Elli...

It's about a different and more like an artistic grading aesthetic approach>>>

Probably you never or even still didn't see any of Andrei Tarkowsky's last movies like Solaris, Mirror, Stalker, Nostalghia or The Sacrifice !???

"...Tarkovsky dismissed color film as a "commercial gimmick" and cast doubt on the idea that contemporary films meaningfully use color.

He claimed that in everyday life one does not consciously notice colors most of the time. Hence in film color should be used mainly to emphasize certain moments,

but not all the time as this distracts the viewer. To him, films in color are like moving paintings or photographs, which are too beautiful to be a realistic depiction of life."

Hi Trent, just saw the films few hours ago.

Very stunning work of Cinema Vérité and every film will always carry something unique.

nice work on the shot of MNU special force soldier, a shot down the barrel of their tactical rifles BUT facing backwards, framing the back section of the rifle and the soldier. Especially when the weapon was fired, the effects the shot produced "can't get any closer to the action", of that firing muzzle. something great that i learnt.

congrats on all the favourable reviews and high ratings. Good to see RED performed so well under such hostile environment in JHB.

p.s. I liked DISTRICT 9's trailer a lot before the film was released, so that i used 50 hours and made a similar faux trailer for one of our film's school's leaving tutor 2 months ago, solely inspired by seeing D-9's trailer then. here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mblAWpE0L8

greetings from NZ

Saw it again and tried to watch from a filmmaker POV but couldn't do I got pulled into the movie completely.

Again I really loved the grain. Would love to know more about that. The grain made the CGI look completely real along with amazing motion blur.

CGI monsters look more real when the shot is documentery style or even home movie camcorder stuff (handheld, grain/noise, non Hollywood gloss). Something about it being "familiar" makes sell better as being real.

The best sci-fi action movie in years. Intelligent, with something to say.

Red is going in the right direction with the next gen cams - more latitude and less compression. These seem to be the only things stopping them besting 35mm.

Wow, thanks again so much for all the great feedback guys. I'm glad so many people are enjoying our wacky 'little' movie.

Waikato - nice work on the short! Love it!

Kyle - Ja the HF100s were hard mounted in some of the MNU vehicles not so much as crash cams (we had RED's in crash boxes for that stuff) but more so as a dash cam type of feel. We actually didn't end up using much of the that footage in the final edit though.

re: digital projection - I've seen the film 6 times now since the comic con premiere & I have been most impressed w/ the digital projection of the film. Just caught a cast/crew screening here in Vancouver w/ the vfx teams & the digital screening was fantastic.

re: the color timing - is an effort to blend the two worlds of the film together to balance the doco & cinematic parts of the film & portray this sun bleached, hot & dry environment in a realistic manner. I feel it served the story perfectly.

thanks again!

I'll have to go back again and see it in digital this week. It will actually be a great way to see how each distribution method serves the movie.

I thought this was very effective. If there was a huge difference between the doc style and the cinematic parts I'm not sure this plays as well for me. I really liked the approach you took. It seemed much less polished and artificial to me than other movies I've seen in this genre in the past few years.

Had to see this opening day and loved it. Excellent work from all the RED crew. I stuck around till the end of the credits just to see the logo =)

Question about one of the sequences: What camera was used when MNU has him in the underground lab and is forcing him to fire each of the alien weapons in succession? Is this the Red?

wow I didn't know this was even shot on red. Definitely a priority to see now!

I wasn't lucky enough to see it in digital....yet... but I thought it was a fantastic film...absolutely loved it!!
