  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

disappointed, helpful advice

One of two things is going on here; either Red is shipping drives with cables, or the rep is remiss in not advising us that the order did not include the necessary drive cables.

I'm hoping for the former; fearing the latter.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

My advice to orginal poster is to RELAX. I had a similar experience and I was at time frustrated with my order. Do not plan shoots within minutes of receiving the new gear, you are going to want to get to know this machine.

I found that despite some inefficiencies (which I reported to RED instead of THE WORLD) I had an OK order experience and one thing is for sure.

THE STAFF ARE POLITE, THEY LISTEN and THEY ARE TRYING TO HELP.

just my two cents.

I have had my RED since Monday and it is STILL in the BOX because I haven't had a moment to breathe. I won't get at it until next week sometime.

WOW!! David, are you a buddhist? That's serious patients! to have the time to post but not open the box... ;)

Does anyone know how much time it normally takes for red to reply on mail?

Battistela, i just hope you don't open you RED package and find out you can't record anything cause you didn't get the darned reddrive CABLE!!

I remember at one point there being a discussion of the RED drive and that someone from red said the cable was included when purchasing the drive?

Perhaps there are two cables?

I might be wrong on this one. but my memory is usually ok :-)

Please remember that it is a minimum of a 3-5 day processing time once payment has been received by RED. That is stated in the blast email you all get announcing your camera is ready for delivery. So, please understand that delivery timeline and temper your expectations accordingly. Of course, our goal is to get the order as quickly as possible, in the order payment was received by RED.

As far as the DRIVE CABLE, the description has been in the store for a few weeks now indicating that the CABLE is a separate purchase from the DRIVE.

Development costs of the DRIVE were higher than expected so based on customer feedback, we maintained the published price yet made the DRIVE CABLE separate instead of raising the price of the RED DRIVES.

Thanks, BC

Hey Brent

We can understand the reason for this, but we can't understand why it wasn't officially posted in the RECON forum.

I heard about it from Dan Duran 2 weeks ago when I made a phone call.

Thanks for posting around here, we apreciate greatly.

Cheers

Emmanuel

I have receieved everything. I just have not had the time to actually take it out of the anti-static bag. The parts have all arrived.

I don't feel particular un-relaxed, was my post that inflamatory? it certainly wasn't meant to be.

but, as I said, $20,000+ is a lot of money. If it was my company, I would want to know if someone was disappointed. better a customer that politely informs you than a (lost) potential customer who doesn't.

Hmmm... I didn't know this either (no mention from my rep). Since I've already set the wire transfer in motion, I guess I'll ask if I can switch out a side handle (also $200) for the cable.

No offense, guys, but I gotta wonder what you were thinking with this decision. The drive is no good without the cable, right? As in, there's no third-party equivalent? So, if it's going to cost $200 more, just reflect that on the cost of the drive itself -- otherwise you end up with all these people who weren't aware and are receiving their products with no way to use them.

People were a little miffed when the Nikon mount went up in price, but can you imagine how mad they'd be if they received a $500 mount and only then realized they needed a separate $300 "mounting kit" to use it?

On the good side, i can certainly see why they didn't just bump up the price of the drive and include a cable with each one ... I'm buying 2 drives, and if I can get away with only 1 cable for the both of them, definitely seems like a better way to go.

A cable for $200? Jim is taking all of you fanboys for a ride.
You can buy a Sony Ex1 for $6500. Does 1080p. Easy workflow.
Everything including CF card included.
Open the case and start shooting the next moment.
You get your investment back after your first gig.
With RED, $200 cable is just the beginning. Strap your belts and Get ready for a bumpy ride.

It makes some sense but there was a better way to handle it.

If you have multiple drives (I bought two and got free cables with mine) you can get by with one cable so it makes some sense to unbundle the cable but there was a better way to handle it. It is kind of sh***y to sell someone $20K or more of gear and then ship them a setup they can't use - particularly when you changed the rules after they had already ordered and given deposits - so I think RED at the least should have shipped at least one cable with the order, explaining the new policy, and enclosed a bill for the cable, knowing that there was a small chance they might not get paid - although I think most people would pay it since they would have a hard time ever ordering again if they didn't - but even if they didn't get paid it would be a pretty small percentage of the order to absorb.

A cable for $200? Jim is taking all of you fanboys for a ride. .

Chuck: go investigate the manufacturing cost of cables with LEMOs (I have). I've always said Jim is making good money on the cameras, and I've been critical of RED in several areas, but I am pretty sure they aren't making normal margins on the cables.

BTW Why are you on this site - isn't there a Sony EX1 user forum - or you could start one www.sonyex1user.net

Back on point, we called our rep and Red says they will include a couple of Red Drive cables in our order which should go out Friday.

Like a toddler, they may stumble from time to time, but it seems Red is eager to do the right thing.

Bravo!

Good shooting and best regards to all,

JT,

Your post was not inflammatory at all :)

I totally agree with you and I know that the word relax can seem condescending but his was not my intention at all. I agree with your points. A few weeks ago I was in a similar spot and could have posted here, but I chose to voice it to the company instead. You chose to voice it to the community and that is your perogative.

I think if you called Kelly or your Rep and told them how you were feeling they would get it done for you. That's what I did and it still seemed like forever!

I agree that they should streamline the procedure and I am sure they are working on that. I hope so for future customers.

Brent,

I'm going on 9 days since my payment was received by RED (I know, stop my bitching!). I've been told its going out tonight, but this thread, and the apparent repeated use of the phrase "it is back in shipping ready to go" makes me nervous it might still be there come Monday.

As a customer, I'm always excited by the unexpected early delivery of a new toy. You might consider calculating the time to ship the camera as a worse-case scenario, dropping the worst 5% of those cases. If that means you say you're shipping in 2-3 weeks, rather than 3-5 days, cool. And for those that actually turn around in 3-5 days, extra cool.

Having said that, if you say 3-5 days, man.. I'm counting them down (from 5), and right now, you're heading for negative 4. And I even paid the extra 70$ for overnight, expecting last weekend. :whistling:

Again, I'm happy to wait, but I'm only happy to wait as long as you guys tell me to. Any longer without a good reason, and I'm going to start harassing you guys to no end... just ask Brian.
