  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Disappointed by the Fixed form factor.

Why are people worried about a camera that God knows when is going to be ready? It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The date keeps getting pushed with every announcement. Oh, and the "ASIC" is not responding. If anybody is planning a project a year, or perhaps two, in advance then fine otherwise come back to reality.

ehehehehe that's why me likes to read you at times caballero

"The BBC alow the EX1/3 to be used on SD productions, the 5D is not considered aceptable to the BBC for SD Production"

The EX1 & 3 are allowed to be used for HD production by the History and Discovery Channels. As least that what their specs says. The 2/3" Scarlet should not be a problem also.

I also think the ability to configure the camera is often underestimated. You could easily affix a touchscreen facing up and use the camera like a hasselblad with a foldable focusing hood. Simply by looking down you can create the psychological effect on the subject of the cameraman not looking at the her/him. You could even hang it around your neck like the old days.

I guess what I am trying to say is just imagine what you want the camera to look like and you probably can make that happen. With REDMOTE you don't even have to be near the camera. Of all the cameras out I'd have to say the Scarlet is the one with the widest range of configurability options, additional length notwithstanding. You can always go with the interchangeable lens Scarlet and to smaller still.

This is a really good point. I remember my dad getting one of those Canon Powershots with the flipable LCDs and I was amazed that if I just shot while looking down I could aim it right at someone and they would assume I was just fiddling with settings and ignore me.

Do we know if its practical and possible to just have the red mote in your pocket, it would shave a chunk of camera off the length if so.

This REALLY is a dumb question but can the red mote definetly not be used as a viewfinder?

The REDmote clearly is not a viewfinder.(see pics) its basically the back of the camera, but is removable and allows you to take it with you. Obviously better than leaning over all the time.

As fot the guy who said he has to shell out another $3200. Thats for the BOMB EVF. Which is most likely going to be the most advanced professoinal grade viewfinder that will be available on the market. For thousands less than Arri or others, that are far inferior.

However, for Fixed, a 2" LCD ala a DSLR will be about $500 per the Oct 30 announcement among other monitoring options.

Yes it is possible to remove the REDMOTE and it should be quite practical up to 100 ft.

Here is a REDMOTE discussion that goes into some of the thinking RED has. They discuss REDMOTE being a viewfinder.

Thank you, Captain Obvious!

I wonder if similar pearls of wisdom are offered at screenwriting forums with as much frequency: 'Hey, it doesn't matter how wonderful your character development and story arc is if you don't know how to light properly and focus the camera.' Or maybe you could stop in at your favorite import tuner forum and remind them that it doesn't matter how many horsepower your whip makes if you don't know how to drive a fast line.

While I know your intentions were entirely helpful, on a forum for hardcore motion-picture camera geeks I think it's safe to take "It's the story, stupid" as read.

Sorry to rant. As you can probably guess, it's a pet peeve ... :banghead:

Wow Erik, you were actually a nice guy over on the HV20 forum. This IS a forum where people ask questions BTW and there is no such thing as a stupid question. Everyone is learning here and there is no reason to belittle anyone who asks a repeated question and no one is above being decent on a forum. Why even take the time and effort to rant...save your energy. So what if we have seen the question a dozen times?

Peace

No it's a Rant I fully endorse. If the question was "Hey does the image quality matter as much as content?" then it would be an applicable question. The question was whether or not a RED would look too big. To which "Don't forget you have to be talented too!" is just imo insulting seeing as it implies the question asker is too stupid to realize on their own that they need content IN ADDITION to the look.

How big is it??

I"m sure this has been pointed out elsewhere but the size comparison pix from Jarred is from the front. From the side the Fixed Scarlet is possibly 4x bigger than the VDSLR (a little sneaky perhaps but in this day and age of ridiculously distorted comparative advertising....)
