Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times. I have been out of the loop on the new RED stuff.

I currently own an Epic Dragon. Love the image but have some gripes with it as I am a 1 man band and would love a camera to be a little better for both cinematic AND run and gun when I need to.

With that said I can't afford the weapon but am interested (potentially) in the Scarlet W. Are there any DR advantages with DSCM2 or Noise improvement to the image? Or any improvements to the image for that matter with the new body? Obviously I will lose 6k and some HFR but what I think I may really enjoy about the Scarlet W is:

1.Quicker boot times?
2.Lighter
3.Auto Black shade (this is a BIG gripe I have with the epic dragon and it slows me down so much when I change frame rates or change temps)
4. Smaller
5.Better utilization of the dragon sensor?
6. Better in low light?
7. Better battery life

Like I said I am not sure on these but this is why I "think" it could be good to switch. You are free to burst my bubble or push me in any direction. :)

Thoughts?

1-7 are all correct

internal scratch audio is another great perk.

and i dunno what they did different, but the new dsmc seems to handle higher ISO much better.

also ability to record other formats simultaneously is reallllllllly great, I do large productions that benifit from it, and small "one man band" gigs where Ive been happy JUST recording prores!

I bought a Scarlet W and am waiting for delivery... still :)
So that is one issue... if you are in a hurry to make this decision, actually getting a Scarlet-W may take some time.

Other things you lose:
6K
Higher frame rates, even at 5K.
The 5K you get is a 5K Wide... you lose some vertical pixels.
Redcode ratios are not as low but that seems to matter less since the image is cleaner.

I found that what I was going to lose didn't compare at all with what I was going to gain.

For me, 5K W is going to be enough for a long time.

True Matthew,

I have just my Scarlet-W since march and
have enjoyed delivering proresfiles together with R3D to editors and postproduction and everyone just smiles.
Auto black shade is great too when changing frame rates.
The low light is just better, pushing 2000 iso ok.
Another great feature is lower fan noise.
When it comes to battery life I have 1.5 hours on my Blueshape BV 100 HD and about 3 hours on the 190.
I have just received my raven camera to use as B camera for a larger documentary production and are looking forward to deliver the files to post.

1. Not really Seems the same to me, but have not done a side by side test
2. yes
3. This is a huge one
4. In theory yes, once you put the gak on that you need you won't be able to tell the difference
5. 6 seems to point out to yes
6. Much cleaner, much more useful in higher ISO's
7. Pretty much the same

Other things that I felt DSMC2 has gotten right is:
- The cable less monitors. I'm a lot happier about that in my day to day rigging than I thought I would be
- Scratch mics
- IO positioning. No more BNC stuck on the brain because your fingers can't get to it
- 3rd party options
- Wifi for Foolcontrol. What a Godsend of an app
