  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Derek Vanlint... puzzling.....

Umm. Other then a 20 year gap between films near the end, not sure what you see. Why? Is there an IMDB error perhaps?

Oddly enough, that gap between features doesn't seem so odd to me. One of my early mentors was an "Old Hollywood" director who'd helmed several high profile, successful comedies in the 80's. After a TERRIBLE experience on a big budget studio picture, he never went back to features, and instead had an incredibly lucrative career directing commercials. I'm sure he could have directed more features if he'd liked (he was certainly more than qualified), but he seemed to prefer commercials. I guess that happens...

When I was Line Producing / Head of Production for a Toronto Commercial production house - I worked many jobs with Derek.

Not sure what you're getting at Timur?

I think he's just wondering why he didn't shoot many films after shooting Alien.

Exactly.

Such a successful film. Figured he would have continued. Perhaps he wasn't interested. Some folks just like commercials.

It's not everyday you shoot a film history classic.

He was on Dora's roster here in canada / Toronto, and he worked a lot -

I know that it's hard for some to understand... But working Commercials is what some of us enjoy. The supposed glory of a series or feature, isn't always worth the grind on our body / mental health / home and family life.

He worked constantly on :30 second TV spots that were 1-3 day shoots, and production only budgets in excess of $1 Million. All the gear and toys he wanted - no questions asked, 12 hour days; and a decent schedule. Pretty good life for a shooter.

It's exactly what i want. I totally get that point of view.

It's just interesting to see a imdb.com profile that has Alien on it, with only a hand full of other features.

Back in my PA days I used to work for Derek at DVLA. As others have said, he shot many many :30 spots, very lucrative work with good budgets in those days.

Saw this at the cinema back when it was released... a very 'un' Disney movie at the time.

It's available on DVD but not Blu-Ray - I'd presume streaming services will have it too.

Gotta find Dragon slayer.... Maybe Amazon has it.

Dragonslayer was one of my favorites as a kid. Coming up through the industry many, many people had a lot of love for Vermithrax (the dragon in the film).

Even rancors loved him:

At the time it was rather groundbreaking as many things were on the creature/FX front back in those times. Vermithrax influenced many of the other movie dragon designs and performances since, though there certainly in my mind have been a few on screen dragons that surpassed the look and integration in the last 25 years. I've designed a few dragons for various types of projects over the years and all of those film, television, game, and literature dragons are seemingly always in my head.

I knew Derek from his commercial days as well.. He loved to be shooting. He would get just as excited about a low budget PSA as he would a million dollar commercial. An amazing person and we lost a great ambassador of our craft when he passed away.
