Does anyone know of any online apps or, ideally, smartphone apps that can be used to calculate depth of field for the Scarlet?

Hi,

Try pCAM. A great little app. It lists all the EPIC formats and some apply to the Scarlet.

The problem with apps is that you're going to have a limited list of choices for sensor size, and unless the app has Scarlet programmed in, you're just getting the closest approximation which I guess would be APS-C or S35.

This website lets you enter custom sensor sizes (by calculating CoC [sensor diagonal / 1500]), and is therefore the best I've found : http://www.tawbaware.com/maxlyons/calc.htm

Well, if anyone that makes smartphone apps reads this please make one specifically for RED cameras. Ideally for Android as well as iOS. I'll gladly pay for it.

The Filmcalculator app, both for Apple and Android. I will put in the Scarlet for you this week.
Besides the standard calculations for camera, you get them for lamps and with all lenses available for cinematography.

Is the Filmcalculator app database loaded onto and saved to the mobile device or is it accessed online as needed?

I'm so totally buying this app! Please post here when you have it updated for Scarlet.

Jerry, the app has the database on the device and it is updated 'over the air' when we add a new lens, lamp or filmstock on the server. The database is also available for free on the website. Just in case you want to check some lens details for example.
We are also working to make the camera formats 'over the air' up datable.

Anyone who wants to contribute to the database can become an 'editor'. Currently we are working on the lamp database now we have all lenses done.

Mike, the program has 3 sections: Film Digital and Stills, every section has a whole long list of camera's. More than you need but if it is not in there we will add it. As said we are working to make this a remote system so we don't have to update the app, every time a new camera comes out :-) Seems that frequency goes up lately.
Keep in mind that all RED camera's work with the same chip(size) which is the same as the S35film camera. Meaning there will be no difference in the DOF and other calculations. between those camera's. So for now grab the EPIC from the list until I put the Scarlet in.

If the Epic can display the focal distance on the LCD monitor as well as the F Stop, why can't it do the Depth of Field calculation internally and display the focus range on the screen? I would pay extra for a firmware upgrade like that.

Thread revival… But, yeah, I think it does have a range ("3.3ft-4ft"), stuff like that.

Also, as per the OP (years later), RED showed off an app not too long ago (NAB?) and I think it's about to be released… Or maybe it is already.
