  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

This isn't a thread about the Scarlet, how much it'll weigh, what features it's gonna have, when we're going to see any new renders or any of that. The question is simple: As I read recently (can't find the post now anymore) RED won't release wide-angle or telephoto adapters with the scarlet - and I'm not blaming them - they have a lot of things going on right now(and always will hopefully). We already know the lens is 8x and will have a 77mm front thread for filters or whatnot. So I have a simple request: post links to the manufacturers or online shops that provide wide-angle adapters that would work with the 77mm front filter thread lens.

I'll start myself:

1) http://www.schneideroptics.com/Ecommerce/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?CID=1073&IID=6132 <---- this is a schneideroptics 77mm filter thread .7x non-zoomable wide-angle adapter. On their webpage the cost is a very reasonable 275$
2) http://cgi.ebay.com/77MM-High-Definition-45X-Wide-Angle-Lens-WideAngle_W0QQitemZ270436254093QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamcorder_Lenses?hash=item3ef741c18d <--- a .45x wide angle with the 77mm thread, an "indestructible titanium barrel" and a pricetag of ~70$. At this price point vingetting and distortion are probably a part of the deal.

Feel free to post all other possible options, from cheap ass chinese ones that are cost 50$ on ebay to high-quality broadcast-grade options that are built like a tank, allow full zooming and provide quality optics that you can just leave on the lens and not worry about distortion or cheap lensflares when zooming.

Thanks for starting the thread. For the type of shooting I plan to do, a wide-angle adapter will be a must.

Here are two that I found. I'm unclear why the wide difference in price.

Cavision 0.5x Industrial Wide Angle Adapter Lens (77mm rear thread) $ 549.95

Cavision LWA07X77 0.7x Wide Angle Adapter $ 159.95
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/626828-REG/Cavision_LWA07X77_LWA07X77_0_7x_Wide_Angle.html

Kudos!

Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking about it. The price difference comes from the quality I'm afraid. The cheap ones introduce the fisheye effect and usually vingette and get really really soft in the edges. They also tend to produce ghosting, flaring and all sorts of chromatic abberations into the shot, not to mention the distortion. They're a great way to shoot really wide if you're really really broke, but you will not want to zoom in with any of those, because the quality will be horrible.

The more expensive(the 275$ schneider one is probably the cheapest) "broadcast" quality adapters usually tend to widen the lens so that it remains more or less rectilinear, the optics are of a much higher quality and built better. If you fork out some $$$ for the ones that allow you to use the full zoom range you'll be paying more because the only thing you're sacrificing is the zoom range - without any noticable loss in quality.

I suppose these guys will also come up with one, if not already in the works.

I'm pretty sure many of their products should be compatible, almost all of their wide angles are available in the 82mm thread, and a 77mm to 82mm step up ring is a cheap fix from any decent photo/video store, online or local.

I'm glad to see a lot of options out there in some very reasonable price ranges - the more options the merrier.

Lens Add-ons

I suppose these guys will also come up with one, if not already in the works.

I'd shoot them an e-mail and ask if they got anything or plan to.

We're in the lens add-on business. If there is market demand, we would most likely develop an attachment/converter.

We have existing lens designs that may work. Moreover, we are in the process of developing new add-on lenses. However, before we can officially say we have add-ons for the Scarlet, we need to test it with the camera/lens.

Can't wait,

Now that I see you, i should ask, you guys have any plans on making an anamorphic adapter for SCarlet?

Might as well ask

I would love an Anamorphic adapter.

Makes sense.

None at the moment. But, that's not to mean we're not looking into it.

16x9: What about tele options?

Good question. When developing lens add-ons, we look at the entire line, i.e., wide, tele, fisheyes, zoom thrus, non-zoom thrus, etc.

It's still too early to tell what we will have available for Scarlet, but, we're looking into it.

What we've learned, from observing others, is: we're not promising anything; except that we're looking into it.

I would love to see a highest possible quality zoom through wide around x.65 to x.75 depending on what the fixed lens gives you already. The idea being to get to hopefully get to around 16mm S35 equivalent FOV with less than 4% distortion, and 18mm with less than 2%. Just throwing numbers out there.

And a telephoto zoom through as well, giving you about 300mm minimum equivalent FOV, hopefully a bit more.

Both with 77mm threads to keep them as light and compact as possible. Even if they are expensive people would buy them to use Scarlet Fixed for run and gun, docu, etc where what you want is no-compromise IQ in the smallest package possible.

Wait and see what RED have up their sleeve. Point 21 remains a mystery and to the best of my knowledge they still have not released the range of focal lengths for the fixed. Not releasing such basic information is a sure sign that all is not what it seems.
