  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Delivery times

Thanks for the thoughts Peter and I sure hope your weekend gets better and your fiancee is okay.

Why do you mention "sending back the SSD later this year?"

As a Stage 3.5 owner, I will most likely need to send my M-Xed Red One back to Red for the trade in value. I cannot afford to keep it and buy an Epic-X for full value.

Thank you Kevin and Brent for your good wishes. Unfortunately this is not a new thing for us, as of late. I had just hoped that Easter would have been a weekend to spend at home. C'est la vie. :smile5:

Brent: I appreciate the effort - and will believe it when I see it. As much as I like to call you and bug you all the time.

Not Jim (or a clone of him) but he (and I and Jarred) have stated in a few other places that we have brought in a entirely new manufacturing and supply chain leadership team. Getting in front of orders instead of frequently having production behind demand is at the top of their list. They are not magicians who can wave a magic wand and make it all better overnight. It will take a little time for the changes their are putting in place as we speak to bear fruit for you - our customers. No one wants to not have to reply to threads like this more than me.

We are putting plans in place to get better at this. I am seeing it from where I sit. We won't ever be perfect and some things will always be out of our control - but we will indeed get better.

Brian,

I am happy you got your CF card reader real quick like. I am not sure in how far that is related to this thread though, which is about SSDs.
And quite honestly I really second your judgment to advise people to buy second hand red drives.
They are too insecure as they are and I would not even consider touching a used one.

I ordered a CF card reader and it came here super quick as a positive note. Red informed everyone when they were on there last supply of red drives and I really wanted to buy one in case something like this happened and media was worth $$$. They are super transparent about supply and its not that amazing that the newest media is in high demand. For perspective Scarlet buyers the CF media/readers seem plentiful, I got mine in less than a week when I ordered. I see CF cards and red drives for sale on ebay or craigslist sometimes if you dont want to rent I suggest scoring used stuff while you wait. Drives have that long capacity if CF cards cant deal with your logisitical issues

Thanks for the update Brent. You guys have been great at handling all of the complications that these supply chain issues cause. So it's nice to hear that from where you stand things are starting to ease off and take on a more predictable shape.

Look we tried suggesting every single possible viable alternative to you, go rent media instead like you first suggested. Don't you have business insurance, what does a warranty matter? How much wear and tear can that SSD possibly have on it NIB (or perhaps the warranty is transferable since its NIB, not sure tho look into it perhaps)? Paypal insures against fraud and DOA gear its not as risky as your portraying it to be buying from there. Yes its expensive, but its available to you today, repeat today. Ps there was a side module on ebay, in fact its still there.

Brian,

Please let's stop this useless discussion. You suggesting to rent red media (have you actually ever tried to do that ?) or not knowing the difference between the need for warranty and a business insurance
prevents any useful input.
And the Red warranty is clearly stated on their webpage - it only covers the original buyer.

No hard feeling, but there are just to many people here that think they know everything and never actually had a Red in their hand let alone have any real experience in the business.

As this thread, as so many others these day, seems to head towards useless ranting I would like to make one more point
before I bow out:

I never doubted that the guys at Red are trying their best. I had some of the very best customer service experiences with them (and some of the worst).
I got my camera back Mx'd within 5 days over the Thanksgiving weekend. That is stellar.

It is the constant inconsistency and insecurity of their supply chain that is causing me headaches at times. Shall the force be with them to
resolve that in the near future.

It always gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling when I see someone trying to capitalize on the desperation of others. :puke:

Jake,

Call any rental place in New York city if they will rent out media without a camera and they will laugh at you.
They will not throw in any extras and and they will also most likely not let you sleep at their office.

Yes - I do have friends and associates who lend me their drives.
But - is it just me being weird not wanting to subrent media every time I use my camera ?
I do not have the time and the nerve to run around and beg people for media everytime I have a shoot.

There are 8000+ cameras out there and barely any media storage. That is a big problem.

And all those ludicrous 'subrent, use CF card or buy stuff at double the price on ebay' comments are unprofessional, complete nonsense and contribute
absolutely nothing to this post.

Thinking about it I should just have stuck to my earlier post that I am not going to respond to nonsensical comments anymore.
Unfortunately I have too much of a temper for that :-)

I've rented RED media before. Worked great, no hitches not that expensive and an alternative that shouldn't be overlooked. Last time I did was in DC, rented spinning drives from DC camera, they threw in an extra one no charge AND let me hang on to them overnight after the project to make sure everything downloaded fine.

You're in New York it should be even easier for you to rent media. Maybe rather than throwing around ineffective complaints you could spend your time researching these things and planning around unknowns, and purchasing SSDs has been an unknown for quite some time.

Jake he is referring to dropped frame issues/drive failures/vibration issues which happens with HDD's given enough abuse and wear. I was amazed to find a side module and some mags new on ebay, I am sure someone will need them and pay premium for it. I am almost tempted to buy it myself just for rental purposes and my own shoots... I'll be the only guy in the tri state renting them supposedly lmao, good business plan high rates...

Hmm... I wonder if RED would consider 'flipping' SSD for a profit and price-gougiing on ebay to be 'having a bad attitude'...?

Personally, I would.

I am currently shooting a documentary for HBO with interviews that often run several hours. Changing cards every nine minutes would not only
be logistically impossible but also ruin the flow of the interview.

Feel free to put Fincher or Sodherberg in touch with me to enlighten me how I can work around that one.

I feel your pain man, but you just now specified you were shooting a documentary. Jim is right in that when shooting feature films or TV shows, 9 minutes is way more than enough for 99% of all shots, hence why the big boys are still using them with no problems. For nearly 100 years, film makers dealt with the time limit of a film mag which isn't much different from a CF card:)

However I can see how shooting a documentary would be a pain with a 9 minute limit

Humans have also lived in caves for thousands of years. However I enjoy the hot shower in my apartment just as much as I enjoy recording times exceeding 9 minutes on my cameras in the year 2011.
(that would be 42 years after man went to the moon. am I asking too much ? - call me unreasonable... :-)
And I do actually shoot with the camera at 2k & 120fps once in a while. And the CF cards do not support that.
And maybe I am just working with strange clients - but if the camera is flying on a jib 15 feet up in the air running multiple shots back to back my clients would butcher me if I would have to interrupt every 8 minutes or so....
