  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DEEP ATOM 3D Housing....

"Does anyone have an opinion on using the new version 2 of the Red 17-50mm lens for DEEP ATOM 3D as I am considering to get these instead of the Angenieux Optimo DP Rouge 16-42 mm matched lenses. As the minimum focus is 4" from front element. Red guys have said that there will be no matching lenses for 3D as the QC is so high at Red. "

If tracking zoom throughout the focal range is your goal, unless the RED lenses have a mechanism similar to Angenieux (which allows you to adjust this) they will not match.

Truth is I love this baby, but I can't afford to risk so much just for wanting to go under in open waters, however I am planing to build a GIGANTOMONGUS Fresh water Glass Pool, and hopefully use it there... ;)

Joseph is in the US, an currently in Spain I believe, I am in Italy, but currently in Dubai... ;)

This Bad boy once ready, if we do in deed continue on and get them, will be at KETCH ROSSI STUDIOS and not with Joseph, as He has not yet specialized in 3D work.

Ross I have tested and shot 3D with the old 17-50mm RED's........I would absolutely NOT recommend it for 3D use. It de-centers badly and worse yet when you change focus direction the center "jumps" and shift badly. In addition the focus ring eventually started slipping on the barrel. We sent the lenses back to RED (they were a few months old). Red fixed the problem with the slipping rings but said that the other issues "were just how they are".

I have tried other 17-50's as well ..... with other similar results.

Can you use them ? Sure? but I would rather just rent lenses that work better and like Jason mentioned, lenses like the rouge's that allow me to track them.


Now as far as the V2's.....

I would expect the same performance as Jarred Land has stated in his post "Optically they are identical to the first version, the only difference being that the hood has gone from a big flying saucer to a more "normal" 114mm diameter."

Since the performance and the optics are the same I would assume the performance will be similar.

That said YMMV.......so if possible try them out for your self! Test them! maybe you find that the performance is acceptable.

Certainly the "compact" size of these lenses and the focal range makes them attractive and worth further testing.

The new smaller 114mm hood also helps filtering.....

Thanks for your valuable feed back....Is kind of what I expected. Pity cause it seems like a viable option for our Deep Atom.
 
The whole design and manufacture process of the DEEP ATOM system is complex. Gates is picking up speed with the first prototype now only weeks away and I am proud to have collaborative input to the design of the DEEP ATOM. Here are some work in progress shots of the DEEP ATOM being fitted with the Atom platform.

I'm at DEMA / Orlando with DEEP EPIC on display, but work on DPA continues back home. Jason sent this pic of an assembled main shell including front port.

Well you will have to send them down here Ketch where the water is warm and the fish are gorgeous.
 
Sorry for going off topic here but Just got an email that another camera company that has a camera able to shoot 350fps RAW is building a housing as well....cool


Edit: Bit of confusion between languages here, LOL, they are not building an "underwater" housing....looks like it is up to my resources to get it waterproof
