  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Dedolight case alternative

By cases, do you mean the cases they travel in? In which case I can say that they work pretty well. Did a gig last year with air travel almost every night, and no problems with the Kinos at all.

Or do you mean the actual fixtures? I have a Kino Diva 400 and they are phantastic - give very good light, the ability to dim, sturdy, speedy set up. Worth their money.

Grüzi in die Schweiz :)

hey muroshi,

do you have dedolights? how are the stands? i heard they're also on the expensive side and an option is to get the stands separately (something i read on another forum).

i'm considering picking up the 150 four lights set. i'm wondering if picking it up piecemeal would be more or less expensive. i've rented the set before and the hard case vs the soft case is the way to go, i think. very well built. not sure if it's "overpriced" in comparison to other options.

Not only are Dedo light cases expensive, but so is the contents of these cases! Still, I love Dedo's, use them all the time.

If you can afford the instruments, then I would expect that the proper case isn't too much of an additional stretch, but if you find a great resource, I will be interested to learn more about it.

Oops - sorry.

Another case of not reading properly. Or actually I was, but confused myself, for I have both Dedos and Kinos. For the Dedos I have a non-dedo softcase, that works nicely for me. Easy to carry, as you can have it around your shoulder. Again, this one does get lugged around, and I have not had problems with it. The Dedos are (by nature) even sturdier than the Kino tubes.

Here's a link (But that one holds the whole kit):

I've never seen the soft case like that one. Hmmm... I wonder if they have that one for the 4 light master kit?

Matin, are you shooting the red with your dedos? there's all this talk about tungsten, etc. but I can't see that it would make that much of a difference and not enough to take the dedos 150 out of my planned lighting kit (i'm also getting the 4bank gaffer kit) and pars.

Jason,

No, my Red is due in November. So long I am mainly working with a DSR-570.
I would hate to depart with my Dedos because of tungsten, but it seems that with Build 16 this will get better, too. At worst, there is always CTB.

BTW: If you are going for a Dedo kit, then you can also buy some cut-to-size filter kits. b&hphoto has them.

As to the stands: the great thing about them is that they are so small, no: tiny. And light. Which is of immense benefit with a small crew.
Now, if you have a big crew (or film in public spaces), then this can become a hazzard, as they are not particularly stable. In that case you'd need a standard stand and some sandbags.

hi jason

no, i haven't. i have one light stand from them though. they are 66 euro if you buy them new.

it's the same. they add up everything. no deals. at least in germany and here. you can alter every kit according your needs, i've talked to them. i'm thinking about getting an explorer kit without some stuff and probably with a softbox. i'd like to run 12v bulbs with a carlighter. download their catalogue. it takes some time to get to know their system.

you mean the hardcase is better built?

true. i consider this as a life-time investment. it only sucks that their individual dimmers aren't international considering their pricing.

thanks!

i was looking at the various models at NAB. i was thinking of going with the ones with the separate transformers/dimmers as opposed to the ones that are built with the light. Just makes sense because it keeps the light small and light, one of it's benefits.

yeah, i think b16 makes tungsten less of an issue, if any.

really? i didn't know that (obviously). that's cool.

thanks Lowdown for giving me the lowdown!

Both 1/1 ctb gel and a dichronic filter will give you about 2 stops less light. The difference should be that a gel fades and a dichronic filter will work a lifetime.

oh, so there is less light? darn. thought it was some sort of new filter technology that i didn't know about.

the built in version only is suitable for either japan, europe or usa. with the seperate ones you can exchange the dimmer which is again local. they have an international 3 or 4 dedolight ballast, but that one isn't dimmable.

in their catalogue they write only 1 stop with new dichronic ones for DHL4.

"DDCF – Dichroic daylight
conversion filter.
Daylight conversion filter for
DLH4 and DLHM4-300.
Light loss, 1 Stop."

do you have any idea what that means in watt output? usually they say a 150w head from them is the equivalent of a 600w arri fresnel. how much wattage is it with the dichronic ctb filter put on?
