  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm trying to calibrate my Resolve output but I can't seem to get it right. I use a Spectracal C6 as a meter and a RGB-LED from LG as my monitor connected with HDMI.
When connecting the DPG-2000 pattern generator I can see 0-255 in range when calibrating the blackness level, but when I connect the screen directly to my DeckLink HD Extreme 3D and output through both the Blackmagic Media player and through Resolve Lite I can only see 16-235 and it's almost crushed at 17 in that range. Even if I change to 0-255 it doesn't show it. I went through the calibration of calMAN 5 and did a six color correction of the CMS, but the colors all went wrong, the screen is too warm. Any other screen I look at is much more cold.

How the hell can I calibrate my Resolve output? The C6 seem to read correct (I've even got a certificate for it's fine tuning at the factory). This is getting on my nerves and I have a job waiting that is critical. Every time I've calibrated a screen it's been worse then when doing it by my eyes only. Either I have the most perfect eyes in the history of mankind or there's something awful in my calibration or screen.

Sounds like a data level/video level problem. Try changing the Colorspace in Video Monitoring.
Does the DPG-2000 output 10 bit, because the Decklink doesn't over HDMI.
Also try capturing the output of the DPG in Media express and Resolve (ME is full range only I think, whereas Resolve you can pick). Then use those files (with the scopes on) as your source for Calman. See if there's a difference.

I've had this problem with all BM cards and have been into great detail with their tech teams about this, mostly from a Premiere CS6 point of view, but it's all the same.

All BM cards, due to their master firmware, pop a REC709 colour space clamp on all SDI outputs. This means, you can't see the full peak to peak voltage signal from any BM cards, only a 16-235 RGB colour range. This makes them pointless for monitoring accurate video signals and i have fed this back to them......as i'm sure, many others have.

Keep an eye out for the new drivers next year to see if the firmware is updated. I've had no info from them to say they'll do it 100%, but they are looking at it.

Thanks, Simon

So, one of their most expensive cards do not work properly with their own DaVinci Resolve? So how is it expected to be used for high end work?

Are you sure this is not specific to Premiere? I have a number of BM cards, and can certainly see data outside the 16-235 (64-940) range on their SDI outputs in e.g. FCP7
