December Dragon Update

Ok.. here are the details for the Carbon Fiber Upgrade...

Hey Jarred,

Great to hear that progress is tracking along well for you guys! Got a bit of a left-field question related to Carbon upgrades - is there a way this would be an option for Scarlet owners upgrading to Epic Dragons too? Being that they were having their entire camera replaced anyway, perhaps the upgrade path may be even easier from Scarlet to Carbon Dragon than from Epix-X/M to Carbon Dragon? Completely understand if this is not an option being that you're already not sure if it will be around long, but thought it was worth querying. Tossing around the idea of going to Carbon for MoVI related work.

We did already remember... Early Adopter price was just that , $1000 off :)

Hello Jarred,
is the total upgrade price for early adopter $8500, or 9500 including 1000$ of free accessories at the Red store?
Is there a limit date for early adopter to benefit of the 1000 discount on dragon upgrade?
Best

Exciting news! Hoping "months" means 2 not 4+ as well lol.

Go RED!

I hear ya Jeff ;)

Thanks for the updates!

My brain is still processing this Carbon upgrade thing. I'm spending too much money lately, might have to chew on this a bit and see how it works out when my EPIC-M or EPIC-X get called in.

unfortunately, the timing will probably be wrong for me, too. I have to spend down my business account before year-end. The money is there now to do the upgrade. But it's back to 0 in the new year, so if my number's up a couple of months from now, it's a no-go. Rats....

I've been holding off on new purchases to see who wants my money more by the end of this year, RED or Apple. But based on the timing of Dragon and my EPIC-M number, I see a new Mac Pro in my future. But here's to Dragon in 2014! and a good system to edit it on. Apple is touting multi-stream, real-time native Redcode RAW editing. I wonder how it will do with 6K....

Fair question, Brad. Have to do the path of going from SCARLET to EPIC M-X then do DRAGON (and carbon fiber, if so desired). Pricing and logistics were set up to account for upgrade, not a straight up trade-in on the carbon fiber front.

It is $8500 net. Meaning $9500 less a $1000 early adopter credit at time of invoice. Cash, not accessory credit : )

Nope, no deadline on that.

Really cool to hear. Thanks for the hard work and the update, doing great man!

Any idea if older Mac Pros will be limited running the card at it's full potential?

These are production cards with beta firmware builds. These cards have 3 "banks" of processing and we develop to each bank. Right now only 1/3 the card is turned on, hence users should expect full quality 6K is running at realtime ( 24-30fps) . We just finished the firmware update that has turned on the second third and it's running at 65fps in the labs. Current owners should see that build become public beta around January 8th.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought the question was about the red rocket initially so i didn't understand.

Early adopters of RED ONE (is, those who placed a deposit on a RED ONE prior to Aug 31, 2007 and took delivery of that said camera).

How will Rocket-X perform with thunderbolt. Like the new Mac Pro with a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure. Will it still get full performance speed.
That's the big question. That, and : what will the performance of the CPU-GPU decode be in RCX on the new macpros ?

According to Jarred's words, it looks like there won't be a firmware upgrade for original Red Rocket for some time, so I'm trying to find out if my money is better spent in a Red Rocket X with TB2 enclosure (which doesn't exist yet AFAIK) or a new Mac Pro with D700 and 8 or 12 core Xeon (which is more versatile than just a new Rocket).

Have you guys at Red had an early access to these Mac Pros ? How do they perform with RCX ?

ROCKET-X

Jarred, doe this mean the ROCKET-X can handle multiple streams? The biggest issue while using a RED ROCKET original during the grading process is that once you hit a dissolve or multi track effect, the playback framer rate hits 12fps. I would love it to not have to have two rockets in my grading system. If that is true, that is very significant, as one Titan and One RRX would handle a true 6K to 4K workflow

Since this is a Dragon update thread, I'll kindly ask:
Scarlet MX couldn't do 50fps at 3K. Would you add 2 more fps at 5K with the Scarlet Dragon, would you?

(Quotes from an old post)

Fun stuff would have been if Ted announced some world centric love. Say, some 25fps multiples for off speeds.
Jarred, really my Scarlet explode if you let her shoot 50fps in 3k??

I hear you Alvise.. we constantly are trying to make things more efficient. We just aren't there yet. No disrespect intended for our 25/50fps friends across the pond.

Great - thanks Brent - this seems pretty reasonable :)
