December 1st Dragon Sensor upgrade price increase reminder

HI Jarred Land,
you have any idea to upgrade REDONE - MX? ;)

Thanks

As Monday's December 1st deadline is quickly approaching, I have been receiving a fair bit of emails regarding Dragon and "what it's all about". Heh. Even on Thanksgiving no less.

Most Redusers who frequent the boards have seen a lot of my tests and what not, but I just wanted to share two quickies before I'm off shooting next week.

First, a very short clip (24 seconds) of DCI 4K footage encoded to proRes 422 LT from Epic Dragon 6K FF material:

Click to download clip (960MB)

There's just a few shots with the Zeiss 28-80mm T2.9 and 70-200mm T2.9 Compact Zooms in there, but it does show how I've been finishing out my last few projects. Best if watched on an actual 4K display for sure.

Also, here's a screen grab of one of the things that Dragon does extremely well. A very organic feeling highlight roll-off.

That's the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF. I tend to shoot with that the most. No D.E.B. here however.

That's even more impressive. I cropped your clip to 5k to see what a scarlet dragon can do and I'm impressed by the sharpness and the noise.

Well, couldn't afford it this time and I'm not sure I will be able to because of the increase in price. I sincerely hope that the MX's won't get "left behind" though, nor that the upgrade will end sometime in the future leaving people with MX with no choice but to become obsolescent on the market.

I sincerely hope RED keeps the MX to Dragon path open indefinetly. MX is still a robust and superb sensor, and an excellent intro to the RED ecosystem.

Mysterium-X has some long lasting legs and firmware updates will still happen for sure. You likely won't see any hardware related advancements as that's what the Dragon upgrade is all about.

As for the path to upgrade from MX to Dragon. It's been mentioned that it won't last forever, just like the Red One to Epic path. There will need to be a cutoff date. But Red will certainly inform everybody with a bit of lead time, just like this thread for instance. It would be nice if they keep it open indefinitely, but it's already been mentioned that's not going to be the case.

With all of the Scarlet trade ins to epic, do you think there will be a wave of BTS on the RED site soon? Also, do you think those sales will be followed by a drastic price decrease on new Scarlets? Just seems to make sense to be the next step.

Well, sadly, I did my upgrade last week.

LOL - sad at the cash spent - but happy at moving from Epic to Dragon... mainly for a bit more anamorphic fun. Think I'll be going LLO - I'll brave the purple orbs :)

Patrick; yes it'll be affected... The Scarlet-to-Epic-MX stays the same ($9500), Epic-to-Drag increases ($12,500)... So the new total will be $22k end of day tomorrow... Worth mentioning is that the standalone Epic-X Drags are $24k (in other words, most people will likely splurge the additional $2k and get a brand spanking new Epic-Drag brain and/or sell the Scarlet-X privately for more than $2k... Conversely, PM me if you're selling your Scarlet-X brain for $2k on Tuesday...)

How long did that window last for the R1 to epic path?

Has the $19k direct scarlet to dragon upgrade started yet ? Is that effected by the price increase?

A couple of things on this...

One, no, we have not started blasting people who have existing pre-orders for SCARLET-X M-X to EPIC-X DRAGON upgrades. Now, that we are shipping EPIC-X DRAGON, those come next. This month, sooner than later, I would guess.

Second, we are going to extend the deadline for the price increase on the SCARLET-X M-X to EPIC-X DRAGON upgrades to COB Dec 30, 2014. I know a lot of people were waiting for an ETA on when this program would start before placing an order so we wanted to give them some extra time to decide of they want to go down that route. Seems only fair since EPIC-X DRAGON did not kick off shipping right until we were knocking on the Dec 1 price increase deadline.

Again, this is ONLY for the SCARLET-X M-X directly to EPIC-X DRAGON upgrade path. All other M-X to DRAGON upgrades will go up by $3000 at COB today.

Well just got in under the wire but the Epic M Mono is going Dragon! Now to get some 'before' DR shots to compare to after I get it back...

Charles, as long as the money is in before end of day on Dec 1, you are all set. Sounds like you are good.

I just went into the Red Store Hollywood with a check for multiple upgrades and was told the price increase was already in effect starting today.
