  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Maybe this is part of the confusion? Jim said this in today's post and it seems like you can put a Monstro sensor into the Red One if you look at it from the perspective of taking the $4500 sensor upgrade only path. And then the next step is to get the Monstro sensor into the Red One. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to cause trouble, just trying to clarify. Is this reading the following wrong or right?

We also said we would offer a RED ONE sensor upgrade to keep it current in a world of ever-improving electronics. We have kept that promise with a Mysterium-X upgrade path when it is finished, then to the Monstro sensor which will follow.

Yeah, I must be reading it wrong because I didn't know... If RedOne with, upgrade Mysterium X or whatever sensors later, can be used for trade-in value?

How? Unless the $3,750 includes a 4.8-inch LCD, HDMI and HD-SDI, dual XLRs, and storage, it's now 25% more.

Jesus H. Christ, would you guys stop acting like spoiled brats?

"It's 25% more" - yeah, so what? Even at $10,000 it would be better than it's competitors (if there was nothing else in Red's product line). Stop it already.

I'm pretty sure an upgraded RedOne can be traded-in because Jim didn't count upgrading the sensor as one of the events that negates your ability to trade-in later.

Has anyone thought that maybe - instead of these specs not being good enough - that maybe they're too good? With the exception of the production houses out there who are lucky enough to buy 2-3-4-5 camera packages (or more) - it's quite possible that for the average filmmaker they may never need to buy another camera nor upgrade.

Put it in perspective, these numbers are astounding both in the pricing and the specs. Maybe Red is doing themselves a disservice but being too good too early?

that's a good point, one that i've considered. my own feeling is that RED will make most of its money off the highest end and lowest end cameras -- volume on the lowest end, margin on the highest end. the middle cameras have the most unbelievable tech per $ but they are expensive enough that the market for them will probably saturate pretty quickly. i could be wrong, but i think it's the fixed lens scarlet that will make RED huge.

I guess no more news tonight - thanks for the early night Jim and Red Team!!!

We appreciate you - keep up the great work - and try to get some sleep yourselves.

Simply put - this all still looks awesome, Jim. Thanks RED team for your continued hard work.

I've browsed a lot of these pages but I may have missed disuccsion on it - I assume there are new solutions in development in terms of data capture? The 16GB card will hold roughly 1 minute at REDcode 250? So roughly an hour+/- per Terabyte? Is that correct?

Looking forward to newer data solutions... I know it's not your fault, RED... battery and storage tech are just behind as we all currently know and experience.

Again, great news from you!:)

Thanks Eric, I think you totally nailed the explanation. I come from a lighting background so I totally understand the cone of light and CoC.

I guess the reason why higher f-stops results in a broader DOF is because the rays are more parallel (ie. more equal) to each other as they strike the film (or sensor). Whereas lower f-stops allow light from more acute angles to enter the camera.

Thanks (kind words), I think you’ve got it! Just draw or scribble out the ray diagrams and move the focal plane to intersect the projected cones and I think it will become crystal clear. As a photogrammetrist in the old days a circle of confusion of 6o micron was acceptable (on large glass plate diapositives) now in digital we have to aim for less than 5 micron (ouch!) [love the Schneider Digitar lenses for these new applications]
can’t wait to put one on any FF35!

Cheers,

Eric

i think it's the fixed lens scarlet that will make RED huge.

5000 Red One sales = more than $100M in revenue (did anyone spend less than $20k?). I get your point, but I think Red is already in the huge category, before Scarlet or Epic even ship their first unit! :)

Thanks

Thanks

Jim & crew:

Thank you for the amazing camera specs posted. You have indeed worked hard. I hope you all take a long break so you don't get burnt out.

Specs and prices are finally, finally, where they should be (I'm talking to you, Sony and Canon).

As someone who knows what it's like to work for a long time on projects where nobody outside really appreciates all the work I did (I have made short films and am a computer programmer --- I guess I'm attracted to torturing jobs), some of these people are just rude. Ignore them. They won't really be satisfied with your answers, no matter what you promise, and who knows whether they have any money to buy even the Scarlet?

this has been crazy tonight.. good sign.. your dec 3 announcement is beyond your nov 13.. many pages.. like it.. we here didn't buy to ari/jason for any reason.. :innocent:

It seems simple and affordable to me. What are you comparing it to?

You have an S35 EPIC Pro Cinema brain and want and EPIC FF35 Pro Cinema Brain. It costs you $33K. Pretty simple. If you want to sell your S35 Brain, there are probably people to buy it. Doesn't get much simpler than that...

Jim

as said before.. too much european lazy style.. many of us have no (any) geek store.. but could say any store for geeks.. either.

just 60m2.. can you imagine?.. our business is mere art making.. never the less we present in venice as well in other class A film festivals.. not many.. because there's no much more.

16bit = 65536 values.. a jump from 4096 (red1) is a lot.. 14 stops is 8 times more light.. 3/6 months later.. there's no comparison.. as dave said.. that's the camera we all want!

most of us will wait.. you're the man in charge.. but.. doesn't seem the most clever move.. for us customers at least.

edit

thx for listening (we hope you keep going.. you keep listening)

Jim and Red Team, you're offering way more than I expected for Red One owners. To think you are getting criticized at all for any of these upgrade paths is, well...unfortunate.

Red One in the hands of those who know how to get great images is an amazing tool. For those who are wondering whether they should still order one, I think Jim has made it almost elementary at this point. If you haven't shot with Red yet, you'll want to pick one up now, learn it, make money off it and then be ready to go when the upgrade is ready.

You're going to all want to be at NAB this year. It will be an eye opening experience about what is possible with a Red. The new cameras are going to be great, and I think this will hopefully make everyone appreciate the foundation that this whole line of cameras is built on.

We must also be careful about our judgements based on specs alone. Red is pushing the specs to new heights, but arguing against a Mysterium X sensor when one hasn't even been seen, is rather premature. Jim has opened the door to the development process. We all get to sneek a peek and actually make comments and have input that affects the final product. But we cannot abuse that privilege. At some point the noise could become deafening and less access given. Jim and the Red team genuinely enjoy receiving constructive feedback from their endusers and those who have an interest in technology. They have shown they have thick skin. But at what point does it become counterproductive if too many agendas come into play, and there's so much nonsensical feedback that it's hard to weed through it.

I encourage everyone to take the approach that when making suggestions, asking questions, and interacting with the Red team that you imagine sitting in a room with them and proceed as you would while having a face to face conversation. That also goes for fellow Redusers. I assure you that it makes for a bettre experience, not only on this forum, but also when you meet these people at events such as NAB.

I am excited about 2009. This is the year I think we see not only great technical achievements in Red's evolution, but also the fruits of their labor showing up in movie theatres, MTV, Discovery Channel, DVD, BluRay, etc.

It's going to be a fun ride.

I think its time to start moving ahead on all this.. There's a lot of work ahead. Obviously the support of everyone will help this. It's a great deal, unprecedented.

The red one still blows my mind... It is ahead of anything else in the price range by a long shot...

The system is great... needs some tweaks here and there but you'd have to agree it has surpassed all expectations of what was originally offered.

That a company can offer such deals in this financial climate makes it even more intriguing.

Not once has Jim let the reduser group down.

People like him are rare and i'd suggest a lot of skepticism is because people themselves don't think this way, like John Lennon said "Instant Karma is going to get you"

I can understand some newbies being skeptical, I myself remember complaining to Jim on the old reduser how he could ask for a deposit on the then unfinished redone. His response was I didn't have to put my deposit down. I would have been under serial # 100. Biggest mistake of my life. But i find it mysterious why some of the older members are so skeptical???

A man should be judged by his actions and if this is the case then no one should be worried about these announcements. In this case Jim Jannard so far has a fairly faultless record at least concerned to the average mortal person, i mean no one's perfect as much as we try to be. Much of what he has implemented has been off his own cuff.

This is not a case of fanboyism which i can only define as adding nothing other than exciting shrills... This to me is just a case of simple mutual respect. A billionaire deserves the same respect as anyone else; as long as that respect is mutual and in this case there's no reason to suspect otherwise.

The way we communicate what we want should be maintained at some level of decency... I mean if you want something, you normally say "please", dont you? You dont demand, You don't winge (unless you are a child) and you don't manipulate. Of course you do those things where mutual respect is not available and have no other option but its pretty obvious in this case that there is no need for that here...

If we as a group encourage and support this business model then other businesses will follow suit. In the interests of better business in this world do your bit and encourage Jim further...

We the customers are just important in this process as the company and that red has openly recognized it in voice and action shows that we are also in control of it's destiny. Lets not abuse that freedom, lest we get the opposite to that which is nothing....

I like it when a company listens... I like it knowing that the ceo is reading my suggestions and considering them.. I like that a good suggestion can change the road map along the way. At the end of the day its his business what he does, its a free market, thats economic democracy. I vote with my money... If somethings fair or beyond fair as in this case, you don't complain. not for want of more, just in awe of what has taken place...

Anyway you are all privileged as far as i am concerned... let's get this show on the road...

Lets get this show on the road... and go into production

Just one very very quick question to Jim.

There is no mention of what lens mount options. Are they all change now?

My real question is :) can I mount my Nikon to the 2/3 Scarlet?

And I completely understand what you mean now - the last one was insignificant ....

CAN'T WAIT to get my hands on this beauty (and hopefully the beast)!!!

Couple of Questions for the FAQ:

What's the difference between the Mysterium-X and the Monstro? DR?

What's the difference between a Mysterium-X 'Select' 'Pick of the Litter' and standard issue? DR?

Is Monstro more than just a resolution/size increase over Mysterium-X or is the sensor itself better?

Can the viewfinder be attached without the I/O Module?
