Epic X and Mostro question...

Epic X and Mostro question...

Jim,

I suspect that the answer is in the affirmative, but just to confirm: Are we going to be able to upgrade to Monstro, when available, the Epic X? I am assuming that it is possible since even one Scarlet will have the Monstro (FF35).:w00t:  :w00t:

If there seems to be a more immediate demand for the FF35 Scarlet over the S35 Scarlet (given that the FF35 is more versatile than the S35 Scarlet for a relatively near price difference) could the release order be switched so that the FF35 Scarlet comes out first?

Interested to learn/understand a bit about the rationale for the order of roll outs?

Cheers,

Eric

You know, maybe the S35 Scarlet just goes away - since the price difference is so small. Maybe that would be a worthy consideration to take some pressure off the Red R&D and manufacturing teams.

small typographical clarification request :)
ff1080 is meaning full sensor 1080...

I think the ff1080 is confusing some folks. Perhaps Full Sensor 1080 :)

meaning (if I am not mistaken) 2/3" scarlet will use the whole 2/3" sensor to shoot 1080. S35 uses the full sensor, etc, etc, etc.

Later,
Jason
thx jason (my favorite web administrator.. jarred you have here a jewel) for your care..

2/3" Scarlet

2/3" Scarlet

The scarlet 2/3 its not capable of shooting 120 fps with FF30 fps in 1080p?! Its less data than 3K. So why not?

Sorry, making assumptions like that means no cigar...... :red_bandana:

You are free to take your recorded 120 fps 3K RAW and generate your own 1080p signal in post production though.

Or as an alternative you can buy an HDCAM F35 at 50 fps 1080p or a Varicam at 60 fps 720p.... of course they do cost more than 20 x the price for less than 1/2 that max fps.

You serious? What exactly are you saying so I can respond very clearly?

Jim

he's saying nobody's interested in a camera that can grab RAW 5k from a S35 sized sensor at 100 fps for $28,000. lol!

Don't you take my S35 away! :)

Jim I think what he's saying is not clear to him either...

not to get into name calling, but you're a moron.

Yes, let's not start that. Although I have to agree with you...

The Epic X looks like Jim is selling us (with freebies) a camera nobody wants.

Dave, you're wacked... The EPIC X is brilliant. Honestly, I see no reason to keep the RED One and do a $4500 sensor upgrade when I can pay $6K more than that and get a pick of the litter Mysterium X sensor in a new DSMC body with all the modules I need to get started.

EPIC X. It's a done deal for me. And I still want the FF35 brain too... Jim may have just sold me another RED One because I can pay the $17.5K now for it and "shoot it for free" until that FF35 is ready.

...I'm really happy right now.

Yes, the real issue for a lot of us is whether the Epic-X will be upgradeable to the Monstro when it is released. If so, the Epic-X is ABSOLUTELY a no-brainer and we'll order two or three immediately.

So, to clarify things completely. . . will the Epic-X get a Monstro upgrade down the road?

Stephen

We shot a whole feature and used the higher rates on one (and I mean just one) shot! I can't imagine our next film using any higher frame rates. . . unless we're trying to set "the film look" aside altogether.

Slow motion is cool, not to mention that it has a range of uses beyond the obvious 'slow motion shot'.

For example, moving vehicles. Often these don't look right at normal driving speeds, because the stroboscopic motion exaggerates apparent speed. But maybe you want to go to a freeway and get busy but fast-moving traffic which you could afford to stage. Solution: overcrank, slow down to taste in post.

Similarly, you need to over-crank if you ever shoot anything involving scale models (sadly a rather forgotten art in these days of CG, but nevertheless a more efficient and economic one than many realize). Also, it's a great way to make your wide shots seem wider.

Hell, I'm not even a cinematographer and there's three pragmatic examples right there. Talk to an editor and ask them how often they'd like to be able to bend time.

Speak for yourself--I, for one, am extremily happy with these new options. I certainly wouldn't kick even more dynamic range out of bed, but I am thrilled to be getting a bigger chip, way faster frame rates, greater dynamic range, and a huge head start on the modules for $10k.

If I did have the option of paying an extra $5K to wait an extra 4-6 months for the full frame, currently unquantifiable how much better it will be, camera would I? Well, let's see. It would be cool, but where it will really kick, I think, is with anamorphic lenses--which I'm not going to use, and for still photographers--which I'm not.

Even if it was another bullet point option--for me--I think I'd stay with the Epic X and spend the 5K on a Scarlet Body to use as a extra/crash cam and a Red handle.

So please don't quantify a camera that most people would sell trade a kidney for, as something that "no one wants"--as it just isn't true.

$3,750 for a 3K RAW 120fps complete camera? HAHAHA! Fuck yeah!!

What will the S35mm lens equivalent be on that fixed zoom lens? How wide is it?

My only concern here is with Scarlet FF35. I was really psyched about the 3K @ 60fps option, even if it was cropped. The way the FF35 Scarlet is laid out now, there are very limited overcanking options unless you want to go down to 2K, which isn't a real option for 1080p or 2K finish projects. The 6K to 4K resolution drop does not gain any fps? It sure would be nice to have 3K @ 60fps. Otherwise I'm gonna have to rob a bank and get FF35 Epic. :gun:

Anyway, Jim, you're a God, my friend.

Ok - check this out - but please don't take this the wrong way - you're supposed to laugh!

I think thats what they want to find out; this is like the largest product "focus group" in the world.
