Dean Devlin is one of those guys that goes BIG but still keeps things real by doing almost everything himself. I had him over today and he pulled out his phone and showed me this photo of one of the setups he did on Geostorm like it was no big deal. Inspirational.

Whoa. First.

;)

Very nice indeed.

This is crazy. Can't understand why... He needs to map the result onto 3d models? Or what?

Correct. This is for 3D tracking and maybe geometry generation. You can actually generate a full 3D animated mesh from the actor's performance even.

Dean's actually real smart here. The extra resolution when in comes to "reading" these images helps a heck of a lot. Red 5K-6K are real clever for this.

Lovely seeing the slew of awesome upcoming projects shot on RED. Really tired of the never-ending "None of the films nominated for an Academy Award were shot on RED, therefore it's a bad camera"-discussions I've seen on social media. I think there's been a "natural" gap between Epic MX and Epic Dragon where some productions may have chosen another camera until they could get a Dragon. Good to see all of these huge films being shot on RED again ;-)

Well, at one point there was one Alexa and one Red nominee, rest was Film. And multiple times in the past decade - 35mm only. Kodak would use it in it's advertising often: "Academy recognizes the excellence of Kodak Motion Picture Film" etc. For much too long they'd stick to that smug "shh quiet, boys, leave the big awards to daddy" attitude. Not anymore.
