  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Deadline for trading REd for EPIC?

I suggest trade in latest will stop when Epic is aviable.
When it comes to the delivery for EPIC i think he gives people resonable time to make a decission.

Exactly what I think. But ... I NEVER thought Jim would offer 2000+ camera owners a FREE hardware upgrade. The labor to put those boards in all those cameras certainly costs Red $$$. Stunning IMO.

BTW I think we should not overexpecting the number of people who will trade in the EPIC. For a lot of people RED one will be good enough for their dayli buisness.
In additional EPIC will need a lot of more investment like simple buy the boddy if you want to use its full value. So Red drive cards could not be used in full because of the high datarate of epic.

Maybe ... and I would love that. But I think EPIC is going to be so amazing - even though the RED ONE is more than good enough for many - the bar will raise once again.

You need to consider that there are lots of "big dogs" waiting to get into the RED game with Epic. All the skeptics. All the guys heavy into 35mm. I am very sure RED will sell MORE THAN 5000 Epics.

I wish I owned a lens company.

I don't think the Epic market will be nearly as big as the Red One market. You have to remember, alot of Red owners came from the HVX200 and made a
really big financial commitment to buy the Red One, so spending the same amount again might be a bit of a challenge. That said Mark is right in the fact
that maybe "big doggies" will jump in now with multiple Epic orders.

I just wonder where all the Red Ones are going to go ...?

When other camera companies did deals like this e.g. Sony, the traded in cameras get cozy with a band saw.

It is the logical thing to do with them for a lot of reasons.

.

If they gave them to schools they could take a huge tax write off and have a new generation of Red trained camera people and techs.

And the economy is just getting worse. I think we'll see more renters. EPIC may come in at a lower price point and RED ONE removed from the product line. That would get everyone upgrading and along for the ride... which I sorta think was the original vision for the company and the flagship product.

Scarlet may end up looking a lot more like RED (in functionality) when it finally hits. It's still quite aways off for these products. 7 months... that's like 12 dog years.

Well, that would really be nice! Curiously, what would people consider to be a price point at which they would consider upgrading to Epic that before they knew they could not (Price Point)?
$27,500.00?
Personally, I am one of those guys that could potentially purchase an Epic but in this economy and with the tool (RED One) that I already have, I am more than happy with the RED One (that is until Epic offers everything and more than I already have). That said, we all know that the body is not the end all be all when it comes to spending. Being able to utilize our current accessories or at least most of them is going to be a huge decision in whether I make the leap or not. However, at the previous price point I would probably just stick with the RED One (although I'm sure I will be really anxious for an Epic when they are released).

Seems to me that in the spirit of Red's motto of making obsolecense obsolete, which they have proven in spades, there would be no expiration of the upgrade offer. If you were unable to upgrade, your Red would become obsolete, wouldn't it?

Don't forget the upgrade path from MYSTERIUM sensor to MYSTERIUM X and so on. So, even if you took EPIC out of the equation, RED ONE is still upgradeable and supported. Not to mention new firmware builds with added features that would be considered an "upgrade" each time....

As far as the RED ONE-to-EPIC program, we will communicate details as they become available.

Yup, Red is absolutely amazing. Sensor upgrade! Free firmware updates (drastic improvements). Free audio board upgrade (with paid shipping!).

Revolutionary doesn't just describe Red cameras, it describes Red's business model.

:)

It isn't inconceivable to believe that Jim has lost a couple hundred million in the stock market over the last few weeks. Even if that is true, he's still a billionaire.

He's a smart businessman. He has created another brilliant business model
and has gone out of his way to do the right thing for his customers.
My gut tells me he will continue to offer groundbreaking products at prices that will really piss off his competition. He is not worried about losing money. His instincts tell his, he will not. My instincts tell me, he is right.

I consider myself a sceptic where business is concerned but this company has earned my trust. I have been part of this band of brothers and sisters since the spring of 07. In that time Red has continuously listened to the concerns of their believers (and nonbelievers) and have responded like no other company. In each occasion, doing the right thing. Their latest offer to replace the audio board and much more, free, is another sterling example.

I look forward to the arrival of Epic and every other product. Because of trust, they will receive strong consideration when that time comes.

something tells me there'll be a nice surprise on the price of the epic :) despite the earlier announced 40k..
might be reachable to red buyers.. would be cool if it were just 10k more :)
