  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Davinci sharpening thoughts

Just downloaded DVR 12 Studio. Was wondering if anyone had an update to how best Unsharp Mask footage in the DVR timeline. Is there a 3rd party plugin for this? Not seeing anything in the app inself
There are ways you can carefully qualify the specifics of what's being sharpened -- for example, sharpening only luminance, or sharpening only a face -- and this can help avoid the artifacts of overenhancement. A good example is sharpening eyes, which can help give the impression of a sharper face without exaggerating wrinkles and pores. For that, you need tracking windows and patience.

Thanks for that but I still have the question of once the desired areas are selected . . . can I stay in DVR to do pro level sharpening? Jake says "Nyet!!". Seems strange there isn't a stand alone 4K+ sharpening plugin available for DVR. Kind of an important last step and required since we all shoot unsharpened in cam

The best answer would be "it depends." Pro Level is in the eye of the beholder. I can tell you there are hundreds of fairly big-budget Hollywood TV series and feature films that are done (mostly) in Resolve, but there are always aspects that are considered visual effects that have to processed elsewhere. There is no single all-in-one application that does everything.

Very, very complex beauty grades, skin smoothing, eye sharpening, and so on, can be done in Resolve, but beyond a certain point you need Mocha Pro or a similar rotoscoping program to build sophisticated 3D tracking masks and so on. For everyday work, I think Resolve is fine for 98% of what I need it to do.

Thanks for the help. Will be on the lookout for a Unsharp style plugin
