Looking to build a Resolve 4K desktop from the ground up with cost in mind. Does anyone have a build they could recommend? Let me know :)

Motherboard: ?

CPU: ?

RAM: ?

GPU: ?

Hard Disk: ?

CPU- Dual xeon E5 2697 v2 series
Mobo- Supermicro or Asus Z9PE-D8 WS
Ram- 128 GB
GPU- Dual Titan 6gb each
HD- Hitachi sata 6gb/s in some sort of external raid enclosure (at least 8TB capacity) with areca or Atto card to connect it.

and samsung 256x2 boot drive in raid 0 and a extended length case to put all this inside it.I wish it may help you :-)

Hmmm I've always wondered about a Linux OS
$20K more for the Linux license from Blackmagic.

The latest and greatest graphics cards are the GForce GTX Titan Black, which are said to be extremely good. You'll need this if you expect to see 4K at full resolution in real time, which is not easy. Throw a couple of blur or NR nodes in and it's gonna be crawling, no matter what you do.

Watching at 1/2-res or 1/4-res is no problem.

Hi. I was looking for Resolve + Linux intallation. Why 20K more than MAC/PC?. What´s that Linux licence?. Thanks.

The Linux license comes with the BMD control panels. US$30K.
There is also a Mac/Windows dongle in the panel set.

Please review the config guides which are on our support web site.

Greetings Peter, just a few "ridiculous" questions. We like Tangent´s Elements, but still want the linux install; is that possible?. Anyway, with a Super Micro Comp server in mind, we´ll have to use Windows?. I mean, there´s no option to use a SMC server + Linux + Davinci Resolve + Tangent Devices Elements?. Thanks a lot for your time.

$20K for Linux . . . Economies of Scale
Whole lot more film making hipsters on Macs than Neckbeards on Linux boxes

Contact Blackmagic Design, who sets their prices at what they believe is a fair market value:

Oh it´s a shame, I just don´t want to SEE Windows again in my life. But, once upon a time I loved a linux console, I was happy with that idea again... well, there´s never enough money when you think of making films. I´ve always been jealous of painter artists!. So please someone confirm me the disgrace of having to live inside a W.

EDIT: I did a OSX install inside a Gigabyte mother once, also saw some Super Micro Comp mothers behave very well, so that COULD be the last option. -less pro? maybe-)

The linux license is only sold with the full control board from Davinci which is around 30k.

We specialize in setting up Davinci Resolve mac setups and have some pretty incredible ones.

PC is a great route as well and def. use the GTX 780 Ti or Titan Black. 2 x GTX 780 ti outweigh 1 black but if you can get two than go that route. You have to figure out your exact budget and what type of footage you will be using most. I see a lot of people invest an incredible amount in a system but their raid can't keep up with the footage they are grading. We distribute/suggest istorge pro and its easy to get 1200mb/s r/w with mini-sas under 3k

128GB memory is overkill 64 should be more than enough. We do build a lot of Resolves with 96GB in our custom Resolve Mac Pros but it's typically not needed :)

Take a look at our Resolve setups if you choose to go Mac (we offer a full 3 year warranty on everything) and we can always give free advice windows or Mac (we are partial of course).

Tks Jonathan. The PCIe 3.0 expanders are nice, keep server +cool, etc... and 4 processors look sexy, I must say. Interesting, to keep growing the system until a useful 6k (8k?) workflow. Or until you have the 30k for linux way ;). Imagine four top of the line Xeons, 1Tb RAM: enough for the near future. I´m getting interested in Acussys ExaSan (I´ll wait until the PCIe 3.0 version) + Cubix by now. But the server must survive a couple of steps further, in my opinion. I really want to be able of 5k/6k into Resolve some day. I´ll look around the site, thank you!.

I'm going with this build - I hope it will be ok to playback in 1/2 res and grade in full res while correting.

Mostly as advised by the blackmagic whitepaper.

Mobo - Asus p9x79 or p9x79 deluxe

Ram - 32 gb ram Might go with 64gb - Quad channel corsair

Video cards - Nvidia k4000 and GTX titan ( I do quite some 3d work as well so Maya will love the Quadro K4000. In resolve it will be used as GUI ) I might start with just the Titan if budget doesnt cover both cards. The Titan is tough enough to handle Gui and processing. I will only see a slight increase in performance with the K4000. I mainly need it for 3d stuff. The problem might arise if after effects and premiere use only the first card (the K4000) and the Titan proves to be much faster than the quadro. I dont think there is a way in the adobe programs to select which card to use. A black magic card for hd sdi or hdmi viewing. I might go with the 4k card but if 4k playback is crappy I don't see the point anyway. So probably I will choose the cheaper hd card. Still it would be nice to see the 4k still while grading.

A samsung ssd to load the OS on

3 x 2tb internal drives
( still not sure about raid configurations )

4930k processor ( six core )

This will probably handle 4k playback (without too many nodes on it ) just fine but I'm still building it as a 2k system with thich I can output the 4k master.

This setup would round around 3 - 3.5k so its not too bad I think.

Is anyone thinking of building a similar system? What do you guys think?

I have basically that exact system. P9X79-E WS, 4930K over clocked to 4.5 GHz, Corsair 64GB RAM, EVGA Titan Superclocked x 2, Atto R608 with internal 28TB RAID 5 1.1GB/s read/write, Decklink HD Extreme 3D, Atto H680, 512GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro (for OS X), 128GB Samsung EVO SSD (for Windows install/boot), 4TB HDD for additional storage. I don't notice any performance improvement in Resolve with the 2nd Titan installed, so will probably sell the 2nd Titan. I think you really need 8 cores or more to see the advantage of multiple GPU's.

I easily get 4K real time playback and transcoding at full debayer in RCXP. Resolve is about 50% realtime. I can actually transcode/playback Dragon footage at 1/4 debayer in real time in RCXP. 1/2 debayer is a little slower than realtime. Full debayer is 2-3x realtime.

If you're talking about R3Ds, you should be able to handle 4K at 1/4 res, maybe 1/2 res Good (though probably not Premium) real-time with this build in Resolve. With the GPU acceleration in REDCine, you could probably do full res for 4K.
