  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci Resolve 19 Supported Codecs

Thanks Rand, good to have the information all listed in one place.

I know the list is more handy for those using Resolve to work with different source footage and deliverables, but it reminds me too of the time I exported the same R3D clip from Resolve, using most of the supported codecs, to compare resultant file sizes.

Tested -

H.265
AVI GoPro Cineform
AVI Uncompressed
AVI Grass Valley HQX 4096x1716 Scope 2.29DCI
Cineon Image Sequence
DPX Image Sequence
EXR Image Sequence
MJ2 Kakadu JPEG 2000 RGB Image Sequence
TIFF Image Sequence
ProRes (From RCX)

Untested (not for any reason, just ran out of time) -

IMF (Kakadu JPG 2000 & easyDCP variants)
JPEG 2000 (Kakadu IMF & Kakadu DCP variants)
MXF OP-Atom (A multitude of DNxHR variants)
MXF OP1A (A multitude of DNxHR and other variants)
Quicktime (A multitude of types and variants)
MP4 (is covered by the H.265, has H.264 variant)

The original clip was a 5 secs duration 5184x4320 6.5:1 R3D (using REDcode 4:1 compression)

It was then exported as a 5 secs duration 5184x2160 2.4:1 (Ungraded, FullDataLevels, Rec.709 Gamma2.2) clip.

Here are the results using the different codecs (including variations of each codec's settings) -

H.265 - 105MB
MJ2 Kakadu JPEG 2000 RGB - 6400MBit-sec (Max) - 189MB

I thought it was interesting how well the camera-original R3D performed compared to the other formats, not just in file size but in ease of use too.
