hey Guysss,
someone did some testing on this new DNxHR codec in Davinci , is good ?
Better to ProRes ?

All reports are welcome :)

I just got done doing a rough cut for a film where i was told by the main editor at harborpicturecompany.com that the DNxHR was the way they work now, so we had to learn avid media composer. It wasn't hard and the DNxHR codec is way smaller and easier to work with. It is my understanding that they will color in davinci.

Thanks Metthew for info ;)

You can get DNxHR free for both Mac and PC.

Whereas Windows PCs aren't allowed to write ProRes files.

So that makes VFX workflow etc a heck of a lot easier.

And the quality is pretty much the same.

Bruce, yep DnxHr 444 is same in quality to Prores 4444 ,not see differences on grading.

DNxHD is resolution dependent. DNxHR is Avids new resolution independent format. It's more aimed to be like ProRes and I've completely changed my workflow around it. All my masters are at DNxHR444 now.

Since upgrading Davinci it's been my favorite codec. Great 4k pro-res alternative for pc users. Needs a little more wide spread support before it takes off though perhaps.

Is it as good to push and pull (colourwise) as Prores 4444

The extra 4 in ProRes 4444 is just the alpha so ProRes 444 at 10-bit is as "colordeep" as DNxHR 444. When it's 444 it's pretty much as much as you can go in RGB. But as for grading, I would only use DPX or R3D directly, I rather not use ProRes or DNxHR for the actual grading process. As a master format though, it's perfect for me. Many think masters is easily done by DPXs, but having a master with the soundmix etc. is the best way to version deliveries whenever you'd want.

Color range and gamma range is going to be a function of how good the transcode was. If the material has its color temperature balanced reasonably and if the DMIN and DMAX are set correctly -- no clipping and no crushing -- then it should be fine. Where I find I need Raw files is when the DP set the exposure or the color temperature wrong, and I need to dig in deeper in the Raw settings. 95% of the time, ProRes or DNxHD/HR should be fine.

Both ProRes 444 and DHxHD 444 work fine on keys, so I would expect DHxHR would do the same. That's a tough test for any codec.

Anyone know the bit depth of ProRes 444 on this camera? The Weapon manual specifies bit depth for DNx, but not for ProRes:
