  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci 8.1 Announced!

but please, don't let your fellow Baselight colleague know ... he will only get his "knickers in a twist" and spoil the party .... only jokers and scalawags allowed I'm afraid.
Neil.
I''m happy to see, that you're keeping this discussion personal attacks free :-)
On the Filmight super secret, didn't you sign the NDA with FilmLight, like we all had to? Unlike BM they DO require it. Do you intend to blabber about it all over as well?

Hi, for clarification, once a database is upgraded you can't open it in an older version of Resolve. Thus, Projects saved in 8.1 wont open in 8.0.1 and in some cases even an older beta of 8.1. If u make a backup of your db prior to upgrading you can go go back to the app version that used that db but of course you would not have access to the new projects. Peter

Exports and imports seem to work across versions, however.

Thank you for clarification Peter. That is what I thought. I'm happy to see, that, as I Mike had mentioned, that it is possible to open a later version projects with an earlier Resolve version. But I wonder, what will happen, if, say, 8.1 version project has key framed HLS curves adjustments. What would happen in this case? Would Resolve 8.0 just ignore it? I guess, I could just test it myself, but it's always just easier to ask:-)

I just want to say that different companies have different requirements for their beta users.

I'm not an Avid beta tester, but I do know that their requirements are very stringent: you have to have an Avid certified computer configuration and a valid support contract. You also have to be willing to devote at least 20 hrs a week to using the beta software.

This defacto means that you will be using beta software on real projects, which is clearly the best way to run the software software through its paces. Now I'm sure that there are "best practices" to severely limit the chance of a catastrophic loss. And it seems that Avid is in weekly contact w/ their beta testers. So I think its fair to conclude that not all beta programs are the same.

Those are all good points, except, in this case BM specifically prohibits such practice in their beta agreement, mentioned earlier.

Hi Neil,
long time no see (since Angel of Death). I'm on an Alexa show in North Carolina (The Healer) right now and I'm using Relove Lite to make dailies from Pro Res 4444 LogC files(applying the build in ARRI LUT, cropping and transcoding to Pro Res LT) almost in real time. And that on a system, which does just have the stock GFX card in it.
It is a beauty, and it took about 15 minutes to figure out the software (only for my very limited use). For real color work - I'd rather come to Hollywood DI, and Aaron.

Jochen,

Great to hear from you, mate ... glad to see that the Angel of Death didn't totally finish you off ;-) ... also, glad to see you've mastered Resolve Lite ... great on-set app for doing exactly what you're doing ... as long as you don't need more than two grading nodes it has all the functionality of its big brother ... using the Arri LUT is a very efficient way to transcode the LogC footage to PR LT ... we're going to start running some training courses for Editors and DITs on using Resolve Lite effectively ... maybe you should come along and be a guest speaker!

Aaron is busy grading an Alexa show on the DV R8.1 beta right now ... very cool upgrade - get it as soon as you can ... his Mac system is fitted out with a souped up GTX 285 for the GUI and 3 x GTX 480s for the GPUs ... the 480s need extra power but do they run fast or what? ... as soon as you're ready to see your Alexa footage up on the big screen, come over and see us ... the footage we're grading at the moment has some amazing shots of downtown LA shot from the rooftops (Angel of Death on steroids) ... the ASC DP did a great job ... LogC and DV R8.1 is indeed a thing of beauty.

Neil
