  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci 8.1 Announced!

Couple of questions, forgive me if these have already been answered.... :/

Is v8.1 compatible with the new FCPX xml?

Will the update be available for current "Lite" users? :)

When is 8.1 going to be available?

Resolve 8.0 is compatible with FCP XML, provided FCPX creates the same type of XML as FCP 7. From my understanding, now it does.
All Resolve updates are available for current users for FREE. Resolve Lite is no exception.
Peter already indicated, that 8.1 will be available in a short while.

As I just said in the other thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?64182-FCPX-and-Davinci-Resolve-8 (mods can go ahead and delete it if they want, I posted it before I thought better and asked on this thread)

Apple just updated FCPX with xml support.... and it's a totally new and redesigned xml, It's called .fcpxml

And I already updated that answer as well with this:
I stand corrected. It is a brand new XML format.
Rohit just pointed this out. And he also mentioned, that 8.1 does supports it.

releasing in oct now. i'm guessing they might be tacking on a few more things with this release (crossing fingers) BM is always full of wonderful surprises

We're testing the 8.1 Release Candidate as we speak ... rock solid with many cool features ... round-tripping with FCP X via the new FCPXML plug-in is trippy to say the least .... also testing it with the new AVID Media Composer 6 beta ... wow! .... this is going to be a killer combination .... I hate to say it, but Apple is going to lose a ton of professional editors and post-houses once MC6 comes out ... DV R8.1 and AVID MC6 is the way to go guys ....

We're already grading our first feature on 8.1 .... shot on the ARRI Alexa by an ASC DP .... looks pretty damn good and the new features in Resolve work well with Log-C material ... can't wait for our next EPIC project.

Well done Peter and the team! .... looking forward to showing it off at the SMPTE meeting at the end of the month.

Cheers,
Neil

We are beta testing and not a single crash; not once. So, nothing to report due to solid performance.

I'm happy 8.1 is working out great for you.
Many people are beta testing Resolve too. Although there is no NDA requirement by BM for that, don't you think Neil, when BM decides it is time, they should make the announcement of the software release themselves?
Also, I think, using beta software on a real job is a regrettable practice.
Did you read this warning, when downloading beta software?
Do not use this release in a commercial operating environment or while in the middle of a critical project.

Haha, yeah, many people just want to jump up and down to express their joy but can't :)

Personally I am thankful to know that Avid's MC6 beta is coming along well though - I'm super excited about it but am not in on the beta - so I think I owe Neil a beer!

That is true... although in my personal experience, every "beta" of Resolve for Mac has been more stable Adobe and Apple "release versions" :)

BTW, do not use my statement as justification for running any beta of anything in a commercial operating environment :P

You hit the nail on the head, Bruce ... Peter and his dev team sure know how to deliver robust software ... we graded two features on the original 8.0 beta when it first came out ... one that went to Toronto Film Festival (God Bless America) and one that is theaters now (Kevin Hart's 'Laugh At My Pain') ... and, even with the 8.1 beta, the ASC DP is totally cool with it being graded on the latest and greatest version ... looks gorgeous!

Now, as to your offer regarding beers - yes! ... if you can make it to the SMPTE Symposium in LA at the end of the month, I will definitely take you up on the offer ... Peter will be there as well ... and now that England (bunch of wankers) have been knocked out of the World Cup by the bloody French, I may well end up having to root for Oz against the All Blacks ... so bring your wallet (and all your credit cards) and we should have a blast ... oh ,and by the way, we might possibly be demoing some unnamed beta software at the event .. but please ... don't tell, Mr Blackstone, he could very well end up in a total state of 'tiswas'.

Neil

Neil.
If the image of the company, that doesn't mind running unapproved software and, as a result, sometimes may crush and burn doesn't bother you, that's fine. It's your business. That is, unless it affects my business as well.
People talk and, if Resolve has a problem, real or perceived, regardless of a reason, it can affect me and other Resolve users. Perception is everything, as any Red user would attest. It takes one bad experience to spoil the"rock solid" reputation, but it takes a long time to regain it. That is the reason why you were given this software to test and not to use in a commercial operating environment.
This is a third released beta version of 8.1, requiring update of Resolve database. That means, if something goes wrong, you can't just go back to 8.0...

Hi all, while Jake is correct that the DB updates mean going back to the old version will only work if you made a backup of the DB prior to the upgrade, which I always recommend anyway, I think each business balances the risk/reward ratio when using beta software and based on their experience with Resolve in the past quite a few do upgrade to the third beta or release candidate once they played with the first beta release. Each to their own, at your own risk.... but as Bruce mentioned, we do spend a lot of time on QA to reduce that risk.

Peter

I haven't read this entire thread but is Resolve now out on Windows? (It says you can buy it from vendors but all their sites only mention Mac OS). Anyone using the Windows version yet?

Some betas are definitely better than other betas ...

Agree totally, Peter .... it seems to me that BMD puts its software through some serious testing before it even gets to us ... Mark was explaining that you get your in-house post-house in Singapore to double check the betas before they leave the building ... the rigorous QA testing pays off ... Resolve has always been rock solid.

We have three colorists - each one using 8.1 on live projects now .... no problems what so ever .... customers are all very happy.

As I mentioned in the PR story that Michelle did on 'Guido' and 'And They're Off' .... "“Our mission is to bring filmmakers’ visions to life at a price they can afford. Resolve 8 gives our two colorists, Bjorn Myrholt and Andrew Balis, the toolset they need to quickly conform, grade and output feature projects to the exacting standards I demand of Hollywood-DI colorists.”

Both of these features were graded on the 8.0 beta ... one came in from FCP, the other from AVID ... we never had any problems with the on-line or grading.

DaVinci 8.1 continues in the wonderful tradition set by Grant of delivering great products at a great price ... really looking forward to playing with the Windows version when it comes out in January ... DV Resolve and Avid MC 6 on the Wintel platform ... now that's going to be serious heavyIRON competition.

Cheers,
Neil

HI Peter.
Thank you for chiming in on the subject.
So, the question remains. If one starts a project in 8.1 and should something unforeseen happen in the process, is there a way to revert this project back to 8.0? Can 8.0 even read 8.1 projects?

humor and irony ... always welcome

Glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humor or sense of irony, Mr. Most ;-)

Looking forward to attending your ACES IIF workflow session at the SMPTE conference later this month .... should be a very interesting conference with the overall focus of the Symposium and Technical Conference on the 'The Large-Sensor Imaging Revolution'.

If people want to really understand how file-based workflow is changing, you might want to try and make it to the SMPTE Symposium to hear Mike speak ... what Mike doesn't know about color and finishing workflow, isn't worth knowing.

Here's the link to the SMPTE Conference site for more details:

http://www.cvent.com/events/smpte-2...summary-c431a68b25ee45ec8cb988e62d705e26.aspx

And Mike, maybe after your presentation you should come over to our booth (#116) and we'll do a joint demonstration of the new SONY SR codec ACES workflow that we're testing out on our DV Resolve 8.1 system (oh no! - its not operational yet) .... but please, don't let your fellow Baselight colleague know ... he will only get his "knickers in a twist" and spoil the party .... only jokers and scalawags allowed I'm afraid.

See you on the 24th.

Cheers,
Neil
