  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

David Mullen's "Jennifer's Body"

Heh. Tell the producers you are coming, and bringing along 200 of your internet disciples. :seeya:

You'll have a bigger posse than 50 Cent.

lol, so true. Suddenly the DP is the most popular guy at the premiere :sifone:

Anybody noticed the similitude between this film's poster and True Blood? Is that even legal?

They came out more or less simultaneously, through the "True Blood" poster came out maybe a few days earlier. I'm sure there will be a new poster for "Jennifer's Body", that one dates back a year ago.

I usually get an invite in the mail, but that doesn't mean I'm involved in the planning of the event or know when or where it will take place. If there is one in Los Angeles, I'll probably get an invite.

But there's nothing like the promotion of a movie at the time of release to make you realize the relative unimportance of the cinematographer. I have yet to even be asked to do a DVD commentary and half the time, the EPK crews never interview me. Of course, it doesn't help that I never have time to be interviewed on a set.

You go to the premieres and it's all about what other celebrities showed up. It's mainly an excuse to people-watch and then eat free food at the party afterwards.

David,

If you could. Given that Fox has quickly become sort of the current sex symbol of the screen, when shooting someone like that, were you asked to light/shoot her in a way that favors her physical traits or were you just doing the same work you'd do for any other actress, given her individual features and whatever the scenes call for?

I'd assume keeping her thumbs in the shadows would be a primary goal.

What I cant understand is when the DOP isnt listed on the back of DVD cases. Every star, producer, exec producer, editor, composer, damn near the catering department are all listed. Half the time, the DOP's name is not to be found. Amazing. Moving pictures. The guy who took them. Not on the box.

The problem is our lowkey nerd status!!! We need to ratchet up our own PR for the great cinematographers and directors, especially the one's affiliated with RED. Make them seem dangerous and sexy. Let's start some rummors and get them out there.

Matter of fact I heard from a fairly reliable source that David Mullen, Megan Fox and Diablo Cody had quite the 3-way love trist on the set of the upcoming FOX Atomic's feature film Jennifer's Body... Just saying, what if the sources are right. And isn't Soderbergh Michael Jackson's children's biological father? I hear "blanket" is allready thinking about doing a biopic on bubbles, I would say that is sooooo like his biological father.
SOME ONE CALL FOX NEWS!

Luckily for him, I'm fairly certain David's wife does not read REDuser.

you guys are hilarious!

i like the trueblood poster better, the other one is a little too sharp. hate the make up.

cant wait to see the movie!

Thanks, that mucky pool was my favorite set (not the actors' favorite set, who spent four days in the dirty water...) Originally it was going to be an outdoors pool on a hilltop, so the background would have been less interesting at night. But it was too cold in Canada at the time to get away with that idea -- if we heated the water too much, it would have steamed.

Anyway, thanks for finding that trailer. What's odd is that I had to go and color time a general audience version of that same trailer, but the article implies some entirely different trailer now has been created, which is odd, I have no idea what they will be or what it looks like.

Trailer looks pretty damn good. It seems like you put a lot of thought and work into the cinematography. I will try to see this one at the theater for sure.

Trailer looks great Mr. Mullen!

You got to work with Megan Fox.... damn.

I have a feeling working with Megan Fox isn't as awesome as one might hope. I doubt David can comment on that, but I doubt she was very charming.

NO your missing the point, he got to work with Megan Fox NAKED!!!!!!

Um...Megan naked that is, not David, allthough I havn't seen any BTS stuff so I can't really say one way or the other if David was naked :blush5:

Haha... it looks funny. Really looking forward to seeing it, evil girls are always fun. I have a concept I am developing, though completely different from what I can tell it does have a mighty and pissed off female lead. :)

What helicopter mount did you guys use David? Was there additional stabilization in post? Did you ride along? Operate? And what focal length did you use?

Looking forward to seeing your work on it on the big screen David.

There's no helicopter shots in the movie. There's an extreme high angle of a lake shot from a 60' crane and a wide-angle lens in the beginning of the trailer -- and I have to say that Karl Herrmann, my second unit DP, shot that lake scene with Megan while I was shooting another location with the rest of the cast, and that Megan was not nude for it.

The simple scene took a lot of planning because we had to figure out how to raise the temperature of the water she was in above the near freezing point. We built a long plexi tank just below the water surface and heated the water to the steam point (which still wasn't exactly warm and pleasant.) That tank was near the small dock that you see. We used the 60' Technocrane to get out and track her as she swam in a low angle, and then did a high angle shot of her and of the lake separately in two passes, and then reduced her shot and composited her into the high wide shot to make it look like she was far from shore.

Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried were real pros, thank god -- reliable, hard-working, level-headed girls.

that's great to know. I suppose it's unfair of me to assume Megan Fox is a bimbo, but it's hard considering the image she's created for herself. I would certainly hope she's smarter than she looks or sounds in interviews.
