I am needing help to try and figure out a long term disk database workflow moving forward for my video production business. I am an extremely organized person coming from a premiere pro project file workflow and want to start doing all my editing and color in davinci resolve for simplicity's sake. I understand both SQL and Disk Databases and that it is very different from the Premiere Pro file system. Let me explain how I do things now:
I have about 4 machines at my house (i work from home) that all are connected to a 36 TB san. This is where I store all my media for each project. I use PostHaste from digital rebellion to make a folder system for each project. I also make another postehaste file system for strictly projects files that goes on dropbox. It has the same name as the folder on the SAN but only contains Project files. When I am done with the project, I put everything in an Archive folder that I have within the folder structure of the SAN and archive to LTO.
I also use a laptop and want to start working more remotely. Coffee shops etc. This is mindless with the Adobe workflow because I just copy off the media files to a hdd and pull up the most recent project file from Dropbox and begin working.
The Database system (which I know is great for a lot of people) screws this up for me. Or at least it isn't mindless anymore.
I want something that can stand the test of time and is very flexible with jumping around. Quite frankly i don't want to mess with SQL timelines because 1. Not all my Davinci Resolve licenses are STUDIO and 2. its seems very complicated. Especially if I have to setup a VPN to work remotely.
I also understand Dropbox can screw things up if I open the same project from multiple places (although that has never happened to me in 3 years)
Lastly I will add the little I have worked with databases in the past I also ran into the problem of disk databases slowing down on me because of too many projects/footage in them. I don't want this anymore.
SO all that to say I am thinking about doing a disk database for each project and storing them in either my Project File folder for the project OR being a bit radical and creating a separate folder system shared by BitTorrent Sync and sharing between computers that way. I have not tried this but was hoping someone has and can tell me if it gives the same problems that dropbox can.
I don't like the import/export .drp because it can get confusing on which one is the most recent and mistakes can happen. I am not worrying about me making that mistake but rather some of my editors. I do like exporting .drp's obviously at the end of projects for archiving purposes but would rather not have to rely on this.
I am no expert and would love any tips, advice and help on this topic. I am not just a colorist. I mainly do it all. I also work with 6k Red footage so I am trying to find a system that doesn't get bogged down. Is the database per project stupid? Is there a better way to stay organized with my current setup? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
