Hello all. I've been sitting on an Epic-X with a damaged sensor for over 13 months now… waiting for a dragon upgrade, rather than replacing the sensor, and then upgrading and having to pay for 2 sensors. I understand that its going to be some time, but Ive literally been sans camera for 13 months. Ive held off because dragon has been around the corner for like a year. Im not high on the priority list, so how much longer can I expect to wait for this?

Have you spoken to Red or your Bomb Squad Rep about this? There is a camera check-up prior to upgrading, so that damaged sensor or board or whatever is likely going to create an additional cost.

If you have your pre-order in, well that's the good news. Red's chewing through upgrades at a nice clip last month and this month. I think a lot more will happen prior to NAB in April.

I would think you could have a camera by April 2014. The beginning is slow and they ramp up quickly as their engineers work their magic, push themselves and gain skill.

The first Epics took almost a day, then they got them down to less than an hour. Maybe even 20 minutes if memory serves.

Maybe I'm going to make a silly suggestion here, but if I recall months ago someone asked about a laser damaged MX sensor and ?Jared or someone from Red replied that a damaged sensor was not a problem for Dragon upgrade. I suspect Red have a lot of perfectly good used MX sensors now from upgraded Epics, sensors that will likely never be used again. Red seems to always try and do their best for customers, so I'd suggest a call to Red, and ask nicely if they'd be willing to replace your broken Epic MX sensor with a used MX sensor knowing that a few months later it will be swapped out again for Dragon. If you're lucky this might even be fairly cheap (cheaper than you renting an Epic next few months)

Pardon my asking but why would you keep an Epic on the shelf for over a year just to avoid the cost of replacing the sensor? Not to mention, as Phil suggested, that you may very well have to pay for it in the long run anyway. Couldn't you have made some money from using the camera during this period?

Well, maybe he lives in another country and thought the upgrade was coming sooner, as we all, so it is not a bad idea. In some countries like mine, sending a camera has a steep price at customs. If he thought the upgrade was 4 month away it was a good idea.

Terry- had I known dragon would have been released over a year after the epic was damaged, I would have replaced it, however it has been around the corner for a while now. It's not used primarily as a rental camera. When I need a body, I borrow one from a friend, or do a trade. Enough time has passed that it would be silly to fix now. Just wish I could send the body in and let it sit at RED for a while and somehow move a little higher on the list because of the situation is all. Maybe it's wishful thinking.

Best thing is to ask Red directly I would think rather than speculating.

Who would be a good person to get in touch with at RED? Going through bomb squad reps never works in a situation like this.
