  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Custom Steadicam for REDusers <1800USD - Post your ideas

Here's the first video from the test in Orange County. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=f32jHjZtFYc

I can see the Laing meeting my needs with a few modifications similar to what David has done. Just weighed my fully kitted scarlet with battery - 20 lbs, without battery 16lbs. Should be a great fit for this rig. I just want to make sure that it can be balanced with good inertia control, thus the modifications such as 15mm rod mounts for monitor and battery plates built in. With these options in place I am ready to buy.

Is it me or does it seem the laing group sale may evole into a direct marketing endeavor, no longer controlled by Redusers but by a very determined representative of laing

Laing needed to collect all opinions about proposed modifications.
As manufacturer makes special version for RedUsers it is required step.

PM were not sent to members who are interested in other options, every PM sent had note that one reply is enough to never get any PM from me as Laing representative.

Thanks for input, Brad.

David started modifications with older M-02 design that was not manufacturer for quite a while, but dealers offer some old stock still.

Present M-02 has rising special monitor bracket. Hence it can take a while for make 15mm rods mount and I think it require some tests first, so members can decide.

15mm rods at bottom come by default. And rising angle battery plate will be also available in version offered to RedUser members.

Vitaliy, if we are sticking to questions about the proposed new Laiing, can you, address Kwan and Miachael's suggestion after their initial test of Kwan's rig for a larger diameter post on the sled to accommodate custom wiring? That was among their first and strongest criticisms in their review, but it was not mentioned in the survey you prepared. I myself wrote in my request for a larger post in numerous answers to other questions just to try and get the message across, but I don't know how many others did the same. In any case, I hope this is one of the modifications Laing are taking seriously, and I urge any other REDUsers interested in that feature to chime in here if they did not do so as a write-in answer on the survey.

I know about this suggestion. It requires first to understand that spefic wiring they tried to put inside so it did not fit and wires/connectors diameters. I'll try fully rechecking their feedback.

If altering that monitor mount is too much to ask that works for me, i'm more interested in having the angled battery plate as a guaranteed and if possible lemo power run through the sled. Basically the less I have to mod this thing myself the better. I know this has all been mentioned by David in the past so i'm not really accomplishing anything here but I'd like to see this move forward and i'd love to see some kind of design plan from Laing or hear what the consensus is for mods that are do-able and cost. Whats the ETA on this Vitaliy?

I was there for the second test as well and if i'm not mistaken they used a evf/lcd cable lemo cable , lemo power cable and I think a lemo to d-tap to power the follow focus motor.. So a total of three cables down the sled.

**edit here's a pic of the actual sled tested.

Thanks for that report, John. Makes me feel better, but what gave me pause was this post by Michael Ou. Can you comment on how easily the heads or terminators on the cables fit? Not sure if maybe the culprit in Michael's case was an HDMI or maybe a 4-pin XLR or what. The largest diameter fitting I could ever imagine personally using is an XLR, and if the post had to be empty to accommodate it, I could live with that.

I have a specific question: I hardly use V mount or anton bauer batteries, I power the Epic with Redvolts when operating steadicam for lighter weight and I use the red top LCD. Is there any possible setup of the LAING with only the Epic and Sidehandle with redvolts and top LCD? The gymbal arm would be very top heavy so how are the counterbalance weights in this system ? Do they come with the steadicam package? It would be only on very specific jobs that I would use a bottom LCD as well as Anton Bauer battery setup to power it up or send a feed to a director's viewfinder.

It is all balance question. If you have more on top and want to have less weight on bottom, you need to move handle closer to camera and/or increase length of pole.
As for extra weights, you can either order them or use any weight that attaches to 15mm rods.

To be fair Elizabeth, I think Kwan used a right angle lemo "Kwan can correct me if i'm wrong" down the post and it did give him problems. No HDMI was used as you can see in the picture Kwan used his 9'' Red LCD. The post could certainly be wider! For my configurations I couldn't imagine running more than 1 lemo power wire, either 1 sdi/hdmi or lcd/evf cable and a power for the follow focus motor for a total of three wires.. if that's the case for most then the post is thick enough. If you plan on running more wires, you will need a bigger post... Especially if any of your wires are right angle to right angle. The only other wire I would need to run would be for my wireless transmitter but I personally power it with a little battery pack.

Here's my set-up to give you an idea...

Look, I'm still not sure how you, Vitaliy, got involved, and if you have a financial interest here, but if your goal truly is to move forward as soon as possible with this group buy, you certainly are doing something wrong. Here's a quote from Tracy at Laing, written on the 21.02.2013

I've recorded all the requirements that you've sent to me and reported them to our technicians. As you will test our M-02 this Sunday, i think all your suggestions and requirements will come out during the next week. So, if no exception, we can start to design and produce in two weeks. That's great. We are looking forward to it:-)

That's how communication with the manufacturer should look like! Thanks again to Tracy!

While I will purchase one of the more expensive systems now, I'm still interested to finish this project successfully. We made a list of modification we like to see. Try to realize them all, if somehow possible, and you got a lot of happy buyers. But the approach to just change the things that are absolutely necessary and leave the rest unchanged is not a path to a great customer relationship nor to success in the long run.

One of small reasons why I got involved here because you have bad habit to post personal conversations that took part quite time ago and present them as manufacturer opinion.
So, remove it from your post. Period.

Here is proper official position of Laing:

Laing will implement most requested modifications and they will come by default, all based of survey result. We'll discuss each one with members. Some of modifications will be available as options.

Uhm that's my point: why did Laing change their minds after you got involved? Tracy represents Laing, so what she writes is the manufacturers opinion.

David, I perfectly explained all. Laing did not changed any position and you have position in my post. So, please remove quote from your message.

We are discussin now tehnical stuff in this topic, if you want to ask me something about Laing positions , etc use PM.

What kind of ETA on changes and what is the design plan that Laing is implementing?

Laing is working as fast as it can. In two or three days I'll show some of implemented features.

Following items are very important and must be modified .

01- Both Sring need to be much Stronger then current version. In my experience, current version isn't suitable to lift more then 20lbs (beware REDone user)

02- Both adjustable knobs on ARM must have rotational motion on a threaded axis without tool, there is no way you can tune ARM without tool once your sled attached/lift. Please check this video for hint (how easy tuning). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC3yExbb_kg

03- I must say, this piece is forcing me to call it Garbage (jus' jokin').

All FOUR knobs in this MUST have rotational motion on a threaded axis by your fingertips. Specially the round (inner) ones. Round knobs are imposible to rotate if your sled attached/lift with ARM. You will have to either lift the sled so high (which is incredibly dangerous) or put your Sled back to the C-stand (lol),
