CS5 One Light Color Correction

Just ignoring you ;)

No I must have missed the question... Plus I only know most things not all... What is the question?

Cheers

Dave

will plugin manufacturers be given a chance to mercury accelerate their software?

Phew, I'm not being ignored after all:-)
My question was, that because Resolve on a Mac requires two GTX 285 to run, will Adobe take advantage of both GPUs to accelerate the mercury engine render? And also, any plans of tighter integration of PP with the Resolve, such as "send to Resolve" command straight out of PP? This would immediately make PP a real contender in the editing arena. I know, that Blackmagic will have to participate in making it happen, as right now Resolve doesn't utilize the XML at all, but one can dream, right?...

depends on what you mean... There are a ton of sdk suites for third parties to use to let mercury do work. We are working closely with our partners to let them do all they need :)

Mercury can only render on one card at a time but it can display on both. I don't know anything about plans for integration with Resolve. We like working with Blackmagic though. They had 5.5 drivers posted at launch time. I will make sure people want resolve integration...

Thanks for the clarification.
IMHO, Adobe should use the opportunity and make the roundtrip with Resolve as easy as possible. SC5 has no true color grading capabilities to speak of, and majority of FCP Red users will stay with Apple CS just because of Color. Right now EDL is the only way to send the project to Resolve and it is simply cumbersome and often unworkable. Color grading is a fundamental aspect of post workflow and until Adobe has a true color grading solution it will not be able to compete with Apple in the marketplace. By incorporating Resolve into the Adobe workflow without any capital investment, Adobe will instantly join ranks of the top post work solutions, such as from Autodesk and Apple.

Dave, pay attention to Jake, any kind of direct integration with Resolve, will solve 85% of RED PPro user's color and finishing problems. I can bet you a million bucks on that. It will increase CS5 sales and convert thousands of FCP and Avid users.

I second this. Currently we need a somewhat cumbersome workflow with Clipfinder to get our TL from PPro into Color, and the way back is even more difficult. A roundtrip integration of Resolve with PPro and AE would make CS5 a complete suite for serious work.

Dave, solid integration with Resolve will seal the deal for a lot of people, if you guys could pull that off I think ti would be a major coup for Adobe and I think a lot of people would agree with me on that.
It certainly would seal the deal for me, I would love to have 4 CS5 suites, One Resolve suite, and I'll keep one Avid around. That would be perfect for us.

Just remember, Adobe is cross-platform so they will most likely only support a colour grading/finishing app that is the same.

Currently that negates Resolve...

Cheers,

Paul

FCP isn't cross platform and yet, it competes quite successfully against AVID, which is. PP is positioning itself as an alternative to FCP. So, if you must edit on a PC, just save the project and open it on Mac. Problem solved, kind of... May be some day Adobe will decide to release CS on Linux and Resolve will then be utilized cross platform as well?:-)

Ha ha  Adobe CS Linux. Geekdom.

I don't believe Adobe only supports double platform tools, they support: Scratch, they built XML mainly for FCP, they support Lustre/Smoke LUT's, etc.

Adobe is really doing a great job I commend them, even on occasions like yesterday where we were done editing an R3D, 15 sec local broadcast spot in PPro, the motion graphics were sent to us ready to go, at that point color correction was next, we were stuck trying to make a decision whether to render out as animation codec, proress 4444, dpx, etc out to Apple color. we ended up just buying Magic bullet Mojo and Colorista, and using PPro's built in color wheels to extended the Grey-scale shadow areas. It was a low budget spot, but we wanted a high quality look because the clients campaign will be ongoing till November and could pan out to be a lot of money. I did not like the final outcome even though the client loves it. It looks cheap to me. I will have to shell out cash from my profits to have a colorist friend of mine grade in Apple Color. I could have saved a lot of time working in FCP & Clipfinder then sending to color.
So all the mercury real time speed does not do much if you can't use the actual tools in the application don't save you time (money).
This is the situation most of us face with CS5, hence our quest for Resolve integration.

Oh and I went to Adobe PPro forums for some info, emmm there's a whole different PPro user base out there. I was surprised at the questions and features they were requesting. I now understand what Adobe has to deal with in feature requests. Just integrate Resolve for us for now please and fix the XML render out so we can render to a different Codec, as individual clips in the XML much like Apple Color does

You can go to Color from PPro with the help of Clipfinder.

I believe that Adobe will certainly come up with a grading solutions. It's just a question of time. Why? Because IMO it's stupid to spend all those resources to revive Premiere pro in the pro market, and then just stop there. I am aware that there is huge base of PP users who don't need CC beyond the essential tool inside Premiere, but Adobe is really paying attention to the pro market. CS5 is a great example of that. Most of the new features inside Premiere and After Effects address performance and stability, which are mostly needed in the pro market, which definitely needs a CC solutions.

I agree that tight integration with Resolve would be a huge feature for professional users.

In fact robust support for bringing a project to Resolve is likely to also provide the framework for bringing a project to Avid, Color, Lustre, Baselight and others.

As a competitive point Final Cut Pro has abysmal support for bringing projects into other systems. Heck, FCP has bad support for a round trip to/from Color. I don't want to imaging what going a round with Resolve might be like.

As a result of FCP's bad support Coloring is always a serial operation for my business. I edit a whole show, then output to a suitable master format and take it over to Color as a final step.

Good roundtrip support would allow me to have a Colorist working in parallel, both ahead of and behind me.

Of course what I really want is support for the ASC CDL as metadata, and the ability to port that between applications.

from a strategic standpoint this is a good time for Adobe to claim a lot of FCP's momentum. What people fail to mention is FcP crushes half as much as the old premiere. A whole lot of Avid editors are moving back, with the price reduction and new interface of MC. Adobe's position to play nice with most systems will eventually turn PPro into a almost-Photoshop for editing.

I forgot to add, one of the requirements for the spot was we had to have FCP. I laughed my ass off at that requirement because I have FCP does not mean I'll be cutting with it. This is what we are always faced with, brand loyalty or name dropping clients who have no clue about changes in the industry. Can you believe most of these nitwits still think the Red camera is made by Canon, or Sony. I never explain anything to these folk or they might think you don't know what you are talking about. Can you imagine telling a Rapper you have a DaVinci Resolve in your garage? Some how all rappers know what Red, Flame, DaVinci and inferno are. Whether you know how to use the system or not justifies a $35,000 vid.
