  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CS4 4.2 is there.. But alas..

I guess we just need to figure out one thing....who is working on the plugin...RED or Adobe?.....Are we wasting our time bugging Adobe to implement the change? Is it in RED hands? In Adobe's hands?...who should we be sending "feature request forms" to....I am willing to do it the proper way without yelling and whining but it would be nice to have a clearer communication telling us the state of things... :-)

Great news..

For example :
- they would have to offer a user's manual in the language of the country whree you buy it.
- there's a warranty thing : for some electronics, it must be 2 years at least, and a precise list of prices for repair.
-if you record the QT proxies while you're shooting, you must be able to watch them on several platforms. Being obliged to buy a Mac to watch the QT proxies could be seen as a forced sale. Microsoft and Apple have been suited for this (the Internet Explorer story, and the iTunes one).
- there are plenty of other obligations, I don't know them all (especially the security things)

There are always tax issues of some sort when dealing with imports. You should see what we in the USA have to deal with when importing (legally) from Europe or elsewhere!

And most of what you list above also applies here. And applies to a greater or lesser degree, depending on where in the world someone resides. Some countries require that consumer electronics present all interface text, menus, etc.. in the nationally recognized language. Some do not. Some make distinctions between professional and consumer level products, some do not.

Within the USA, consumer electronics products are required to carry manufacturer warranties of one year, which transfer to any new owners within that one year time period. But professional or specialty products are not required to do so.

Up to this point with the RED One, RED has obviously devoted most of their resources to certain aspects -- product development mostly. We don't even have a "full featured" user manual in english, let alone translations for french, spanish, german, japanese, etc... I'm going to assume that the fixed-lens Scarlet will be much different and will deliver with a lot more consumer-friendly frills, documentation, software CD in the box, etc..

On the other hand, it comes at great expense to provide and maintain product support that conforms to localized requirements around the world. This would need to happen for RED to sell their cameras through retail channels in other countries. I don't know if that will happen any time soon. In the current situation, RED does what they must to conform with requirements in north america and then sells them only from north america. As far as the electronics aspects of the system, they pretty much comply on a global scale, so that is already a huge step in the right direction. I can point to products from the UK, France, Germany, etc.. that work the same way when we import them here. It can sometimes feel as if the manufacturers in other countries don't really care about the american market or that we're considered second rate. Typically that's not the case, but rather just a logistical issue of global support.

That's what I keep saying about Red's biggest drawback : they're focused on new developments, forgetting about the reality of editing 4K footage, especially on PC, despite of the usual "Your opinion matters, blah blah blah..."

They really should hire more software guys, and offer a real alternative to Mac.

.

Simply adding bodies to a S/W development effort is much easier said than done. Especially with fast moving development going on in tandem with incomplete hardware and coordinating interaction with a number of different 3rd parties.

There's a good likliehood adding bodies could slow things down in such an envirnment, Especially in the short term.

"The Mythical Man Month" is a great read on managing S/W development efforts.

I would like to use Adobe, but I have to complete a current project on FCP while I wait for Adobe to catch up. To be fair, I could probably use Adobe. I don't transcode anything in FCP. I use the .mov reference files and edit as is. I don't even let it render off line to improve editing performance. In the end, I want an EDL to feed into SCRATCH. I do look forward to CS5 and true 64-bit. Hopefully that will make PPro a stable platform.

The most responsive company w/r/t RED so far has been Assimilate. They offer new builds shortly after RED introduces a new feature. I am glad I invested in SCRATCH.

Hold tight build 21 color is being worked out...
cheers for the encouragement Obin...I'm sure they have been working on it really hard from July.
We're trying to get an idea of delivery dates/timelines. So if you have any info, please...

Whew! It's a good thing I stumbled on this thread, as I was very close to pulling the trigger on Adobe CS4 Production Premium. I guess I'll take a closer look at Sony Vegas 9 Pro, then. I hope it supports RED Rocket™.

Oh yeah; zero Apple products in this household and that's not gonna change when my R1 finally arrives.

A wave to Stacey Spears from another long-time AVS forumite. Hiya!

Beta?

Beta?

Hey Folks,

Sorry about the lack of any Adobe response on this thread. We generally don't monitor reduser.net, but this morning I was doing some research and I ended up here.

Adobe generally doesn't release software to general release with Beta software. Since the SDK (and Firmware) are still in Beta and working on CS4 will directly take resources from CS5 (and 64 bit) we've been putting our man-hours into CS5, waiting for RED to slow down to then determine what to do about CS4.

So, if you really want to try out beta software, PM me and we can talk about getting you on the beta's for the 64 bit versions of AE CS5 and PPro CS5 that have the newer beta RED sdk too. I spent a while last week cutting a roto using a bunch of Red footage with AE using a constant 5GB of RAM. Nary and Out of Memory error in sight.

"waiting for RED to slow down"

Uhmmm... I will suggest that there is no holding of breath involved with that one.

It does sound like some nice software is coming down the pike from Adobe, for those who can afford to sit it out for a few months. It also sounds like the best case scenario has Adobe perpetually behind by a year or so in Red support.

I suppose it is just a matter of market share, Red may be growing exponentially in the high end but it is incrementally small when you fold in the low end. If a company isn't expecting to get its editing suite into the smaller market of television shows and feature films then it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend man-hours on supporting R3Ds rather than something like AVCHD for the tens of thousands of camcorders out there.

Wow, that came out a lot snarkier than I had meant it to.

Chris, I am very glad to have you here. Now we know for sure that someone from Adobe is monitoring Red User.
Just a question. Can I install CS5 Beta besides to CS4 without messing with my projects, or should I use a fresh PC.

If a company isn't expecting to get its editing suite into the smaller market of television shows and feature films then it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend man-hours on supporting R3Ds rather than something like AVCHD for the tens of thousands of camcorders out there.

That's true.. But on the other side this "smaller market" is the market who builds the image of a company. This market makes users - even the beginners - to use or dump a software. Every body likes to hear that his software was used in some features or shows, even if he will never use the features that made that software desirable for the pro market.
For this reason I think that Red Market is the best bridge for Adobe to the Pro Market (I'm talking mostly about Premiere Pro, because After Effects and Photoshop are already there). That's because Red community has users from both sides of the market: high end and low end. The better the Adobe RED workflow, the more red users will use it and the more features and shows will come out from this workflow.
This will have a strong impact on AVCHD camcorder community to rely more and more on Adobe for their workflow.

To sum it up
If
"image" = "High end smaller market"
and
"money" = "Low end bigger market"
then
you need "image" to make "money" :yesnod::yesnod::yesnod::sifone::sifone::sifone:

So, uh, what ever happened to Christopher Prosser? Anyone else try to contact him? Is the guy even for real?

Yeah, Christopher is for real! Although I think his visits to reduser aren't so frequent, so better hold your breath for a little while Jeff!

Chris/Red,

You (Chris) mentioned in pm to wannabe beta user on 8 Dec there will be a CS4 beta plugin (Red) made publically available in the next few weeks.

Is this still the case?

Dave

note: Someone care to enlighten us when Adobe will support current Red color science.....Anybody at all...??

Am I for real?

Am I for real?

Why yes, I am for real ;). Sorry about the silence, I thought I would get emails when new messages were posted to the thread and I went on my merry way.

Adobe has been shut down the past two weeks, and I took a nice break from the computer.

First off, the first batch of people should have gotten a PM back from me and been invited into the beta program. If you haven't gotten your invite, please let me know.

I hate the PM interface on this board, especially since it doesn't allow me to PM more than 5 people at once, and then makes we wait before I can post the new batch. I've put off dealing with the latest batch of PM's sitting in my in box because of this. For faster service, drop me an email, since the main bottleneck is that I need:

1) Your full name
2) Your email address
3) A little bit about yourself/company

I neglected to mention this in my first post. I can be found at cprosser at adobe.com.

I'm not sure where the CS4 build 21 plugin is. I'm guessing RED is prepping it now since build 21 went release on December 17th.
