  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crimson Workflow is available for download.

I STRONGLY suggest you purchase his app CRIMSON while it is at the current price -

You will be blown away by the next build.

Ian, are you raising prices soon?

When does .9 come out?

yes he was at the MBS offices last week and we were talking about the NEW splashy features and when he gets it working it will be right sweet. Def a great feature(s).
and yes he's basically giving this thing away so i agree with mark that you should grab it while you have the chance!

Just bought it! I don't have need for it for a couple of weeks, but Mark's scare tactic worked :-). Plus I want to meet you at NAB and say I'm an actual customer.

That is indeed what I'm doing, but as Color can read DPXs natively, the trick is to get them in there (which is traditionally done through FCP EDLs.

Sitting with a couple of hundred events from RC makes me want to buy gluetools, but it shouldn't be a neccessary step (not to be cheap, just broke from only doing tests after getting my RED, to be redy for my first real gig with it in a week...)

A "send to color" functionality or an automation to wrap the relevant events would indeed be very nice.

RE: FCP>RedCine>DPX>Color

RE: FCP>RedCine>DPX>Color

I was playing around with this idea as well. I did a test and the roundtrip.xml that Crimson puts out for the roundtrip back to FCP will open in COLOR, complete with dissolves, etc. Here's the catch. As anyone who knows how to use COLOR correctly, you have to "bake" in any speed changes, and/or stuff that color doesn't like.

What I did was online my stuff to RedCine and then did the speed changes post online. I also did my scales in RedCine, assuming that scaling directly from the 4K original would produce better results than doing it after I rendered to the HD 1080 LOG I am coloring with.

So, If you have no speed changes, or anything in your sequence that COLOR doesn't like, and you put your DPX renders in the specific event folders, like the Crimson instructions say, you should be able to open up that roundtrip.xml directly in COLOR, grade, and then, I'd say render out to ProRes HQ and send to FCP (either with Send To which might not work since it didn't originate there, or export and EDL or .xml) I also know a little coding trick that might help you get it back to FCP if either doesn't work, but I'll save that for later.

Good luck, let me know if everything works out cause coloring with DPX files is totally the way to go.

I thought you had already done this. Or are you asking if I can automate it?

I've been looking at the AJA wrapper, it looks doable, but first you will need to go through FCP I think.

Ian

I've wanted to do this same roundtrip, but you can't unless you have Gluetools can you?

I've wanted to do this same roundtrip, but you can't unless you have Gluetools can you?

The easiest way to do this is to export an EDL from Final Cut. As long as you have the source file names and time code as part of the DPX filenames, Color will find them regardless of the names of the containing folders (i.e., "EVENT01," or "SHOT01," or whatever you call them). You then import the EDL as a new project in Color and specify the master folder that contains all of the DPX files and folders. Of course, since an EDL can only contain one video track, you'll need to get your final edit down to that one track. However, this is a common practice in DI's, since most conforming systems to this point expect you to do this anyway - although a number of them are now incorporating multi track timelines (Lustre, Pablo, and Nucoda come to mind).

I've tried the roundtrip XML approach to this and it does not work (at least I can't get it to work). But the EDL works quite well.

Sorry to mislead...

The test I ran involving the roundtrip.xml directly to COLOR involved rendered QT files, not DPX as I had thought. When I just tested this the DPX clips come up offline in the sequence in COLOR. Looks like for now you still need a QT wrapper, like AJA's or GlueTools.

I think I might be able to futz with the .xml and get it to work. I'll let ya'll know if anything transpires...

It's a little buggy it seems,

Sorry the R3D metadata import is very new don't try running anything but straight R3D through 8.9 until I release a fix. I just snuck it into this build because I needed the frame size ;)

Ian

so did Crimson, as far as FCP and Color are concerned, get completely outdated today? They told me in the booth that you can edit the proxies and then Color will automatically conform back to the R3Ds for grading and output.
