  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crimson Workflow is available for download.

Ian-
Great demo, thanks. And the weapons bit, very nice... who is that though, you? I have noticed that material I shot at 48 fps needs rendering, while stuff shot at 23.98 does not. Is this correct? Also, when I relinked to ProRes files (after taking the proxies offline), there were several that claimed while relinking that they were not exact (dift in/outs), however I could still relink them anyway... will they be okay when conforming?
Thanks
Cheers-

Again,
I think you should overnight online 'complete takes'. Afterwards you will be able to continue cutting.

If you need footage from other takes later, create another small sequence with the new footage and roundtrip that, again using complete takes. Then move those roundtripped clips into your main sequence.

A clip with a speed change must be rendered from beggining to end of media anyway, and yes the speed change would need to be rendered again when you return to FCP.

I hope that helps,

A lot of great info on this thread, thanks.
One question, which may or may not be stupid.

There is talk of transcoding the proxy files to new ProRes files, I would assume that these 'new' ProRes files we are talking about are new self contained files... So how do they relate back to the original .R3D files?? Is the connection preserved during the transcoding procedure??

No. Once they are converted to ProRes they are not looking at the R3D anymore. The reason to transcode is to work within Final Cut studio and other applications easier.

Personally, I think trying to offline/online a very complicated timeline with a lot of stuff (fx, titles, dissolves, layers) is asking for trouble. Especially if you send a 90 minute sequence. Yeah, theoretically that should work. Theoretically.

I think you'd be wiser to break up your round trips into 15 minute or less sequences and then add the fancy stuff once they have successfully returned, then assemble those in the final sequence.

But I haven't lived through it yet either.

K, I feel a little dense right now. To tell you the truth, Red is a brand new workflow to me as of 2 weeks ago. Loads of film and HD experience, but I haven't had the opportunity to delve into this until now, so bare with me. Also, I apologize ahead of time for repeating things that may have been explained.

Planned project without going into too many details...

1. Shoot Red (obviously) 4k,
2. edit proxy files in FCP ---------> Transcode to Pro Res or not?
I am leaning towards transcoding to ProRes so we have a highish quality version for editorial preview, promos, viral trailers, screeners etc.. Thoughts?
3. Media Manage locked cut and export DPX files of clips.-----> ??? A bit lost here in terms of automation within Redcine etc.
4. Deliver .dpx files and edl of locked cut to our baselight for CC and prep for film out.
5. Film out.

My main confusion is do I need a round trip for some reason? I don't intend to finish this project in FCP, it is destined for film finish. My question #3 is the main confusion for me. Do I need Ian's product to help in this area? My tests thus far have suggested that I will, but I want to make sure.

Thanks

Postfusion, there are two workflows currently supported by Crimson (more on the way). One is to export XML and render Quicktimes, then roundtrip into FCP and finish in Color.

The second is to send an XML to Crimson export DPX or Tiff sequences from REDline or Redcine. Then take an EDL from FCP to a Quantel or Baselight etc. In fact I was working directly today with a customer doing just that.

I agree strongly with what Joelnet says, do the complicated stuff with your timeline after you have roundtripped complete takes. This is the most flexible workflow in my mind for people doing a FinalCut->Color. However the truth is that Crimson deals very transparently with XML and almost everything you export from Final Cut Pro will be reimported upon import, so doing complicated things first "should" work.

Good Times, thanks for allowing me to bend an ear.

I am working on a crazy high profile project right now and am glad to finally be within the RED community.

Ive been trying to export a dpx sequence from redcine using the xml created by crimson and no matter what settings I put, I dont get seperate folders and numbering. Any idea why?

Wow! Crimson really pulled through for me this week on a massive JetBlue campaign. Super awesome. It's something everyone needs to have. Saved us from days of additional rendering and labor. Awesome.

Hi Ian,
can't seem to get the redcine to construct the xml... any suggestions?
i've already placed all the raw file folders into an external HD, but it won't do it!
i'm dong the exact process you show on the demo reel...

Thanks Ian, got the construct to work and exported the cc's sequence from redcine and made the roundtrip xml. now, i can't for the life of me relink the files when i import the roundtrip xml into fcp. i've double checked everything and can't seem to figure out what i'm doing wrong... anyways, maybe you can give me some light on it...
i dig the workflow program though!! if i could just get the roundtrip xml to work back into fcp, i'd be sold on it!!
thanks again for creating this!

Post your roundtrip XML on the Crimson forum, let's see if we can figure out your problem.

So... how do I go about using After Effects with some clips?

Ian came by the new Offhollywood yesterday to show me what he's been up to ... and check out our new digs.

He's got a CRAZY new feature (coming very soon). You will be SHOCKED. He's one clever fella'

I STRONGLY suggest you purchase his app CRIMSON while it is at the current price -

You will be blown away by the next build.
