  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crimson Workflow is available for download.

If you've been working with Crimson Workflow with mixed results fear not ... I believe Ian is working hard at working out the bugs. I provided a lot of feedback yesterday for some of the problems I am having and he was listening and coding all along. We had some great progress.

It's such a work in progress and he is (as of right now) -in my mind - providing the only real workable solution to a true conform. Something we HAVE to have to make this cam work. Keep it up Ian, we are all counting on ya! (how's that for pressure?)

Good news is, I'm jumping 0.8.3 and going straight to 4 - and this build is codenamed no-we're-getting-somewhere. In a few hours.

0.8.4 is up! http://www.crimsonworkflow.com/download.htm

Release Notes 0.8.4
Overhauled roundtripping
Fixed Issue so event numbering now matches Redcine
Fixed --QTCodec issue in REDline Render

Release Notes 0.8.3
Redcine Instructions... button working.
Fixed issue with handles not being passed to system
Fixed issue with intermediates not being properly replaced.
Fixed issue with white frames from REDline render.
Intermediates and Output File Assignment are now done dynamically.
Temporary solution for "Cowboy" Intermediates that won't "load construct"

Known problems
In some situations the load construct problem persists there is a temporary solution until we solve this difficult bug. Check the forum.

Frame size selector is not working yet. (Very important to core of workflow I understand.)

25fps timelines have problems in Redcine. I believe this bug may have to do with the way Redcine loads in and out points. You might try just loading Intermediates and no XML and setting Complete Takes in Crimson. Or rendering with REDline.

okeyyy but you know i am a crippled tester, just what redrelay gives me hehe
to ask before i start:

1.
should i avoid to mix things

23,98 fps 2:1 2k 4k
24 fps 2:1 2k 4k

the same with 16:9
creating proxies with _NA in the File Name
using r3d files with user generated names....feelmypain.r3d

Most of Crimson is frame rather than timecode based. It just uses timecode when it has no other choice. So a lot of weird frame rate things might work just fine. Butttt... we'll have to see.

Ian-
Have you any advice for working with combo 48 & 24 fps material?

Ian, will you be releasing part 2 of the Crimson Tour soon? I have not purchased this just yet (I have only owned my camera for one week...), but this looks like a phenomenal solution...the cliff-hanger at the end of part 1 left me yearning for the next exciting episode...

...it does make me wonder why RED didn't include a round-tripping conform feature such as this one in the first place...it has the potential to make the basic workflow so much more flexible and powerful. Remarkable stuff.

You should charge more. But gimme a sec to download my copy first...

Working on these videos now. I had to start over because they were too large and the programs been changing. I understand the importance of taking the time to do this but I have to give my current customers a bug free workflow.

You should charge more. But gimme a sec to download my copy first...

You can pay any amount you want in paypal ;)

Hi Ian,

One suggestion. Why don't you change your avatar with crimson logo. It will look cool, identify with your company, easy for new Reduser members to identify the man behind movement.

Cheers

Actually I think Ian should consider changing the Crimson logo to something closer to his avatar.

themes:

1. Riding the Red wave (as Mark P. pointed out)
2. water - fluid as relating to "smooth workflow"
3. surfing requires agility and adaptability.

IB, you're a God.

Can I add to the wishlist? It would be great to have some path into Color @ 2k DPX from Crimson, so I can avoid my sworn enemy RedSinny. Any chance of an "XML for Color" option sometime in the future?

I actually am not familiar with xml workflows all that much but does this mean that the intermediates can save you time and CPU by not having to work directly with R3D files?

Not exactly, the "Cowboy" Intermediates save you the trouble of having to copy and rename R3D files before you open them in Redcine. Redcine is a digital film to tape machine essentially. It organizes footage based on Roll and Take numbers, as if you had brought rolls of film to a telecine suite. Running an intermediate through Redcine is the digital equivalent of cutting your negative before it goes through the machine.

Moral of story, it works and it's useful. But keep in mind there are many ways to skin this cat, and you can use Crimson without intermediates to do a traditional pull list workflow. Or without Redcine, to do a blind export of your timeline with REDline, so you can color grade in any application you want.

Right. Thanks Ian. And it is a great looking program!

Thanks!

Thanks!

Awesome - after never getting Redtrip to work and writing out EDLs manually this has saved me HEAPS of time.

Off to purchase right now.

Cheers!
