  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cracking the CUDA!

emmm ehh is is legal, to post that hack here? Nvidia might come after you Tom,

that was right on the adobe boards sir. and it's a simple hack you can revert back to very easily, doesn't even effect ur firmware or warranty. so all 295 gtx users out there can get a little more power out of their mercury playback now and not have to downgrade to a 285

I don't think anybody will come after you. But you do this on your own risk, any other card than the ones officially listed just haven't been tested. Adobe wanted to make this version as stable as possible and unfortunately there are subtle differences between the cards handling of CUDA. So, they restricted the number of cards to have those carefully tested for reliability.
That said, you should have a pretty good chance with the GTX 295, since it's very similar to the 285. But don't blame it on Adobe if you get rendering errors or crashes.

it's a very small hack i believe, so if you do run into stability issues, you can revert back, just make sure you copy and paste the whole file over or your gonna have to end up reinstalling your video card drivers. It's just nice that the option is going to be there and for people who already have a 295 or othe video cards, and they can test it out for themselves.

as for "getting me" there have been tons and tons of cases of minor hacks to get what you want out of a piece of hardware or software publicly displayed everywhere. there are hacks you can do with after effects to fix the pro res gamma issue, there are hacks for avid to loop around render issues, there are hacks that fix glitches, and I haven't seen any cases of anybody getting in trouble for it. Nobody is making a profit off it, it's for the user to try to build a better more efficient workflow. The money has been paid in full for the software and hardware already.

Nice find Tom, thank you.

I see there is a hack to get quadro fx drivers to run on pc Gtx cards

here goes
Damn, it's the same info I found several months ago already. Tried it back then and it didn't work, most likely because I was on a Windows 7 64-bit.

you should relax, this does not advocate piracy, or the unlawful use of software or hardware. Overclocking is a form of hacking, and you see a lot of people talk about it on the forums. Very little difference in getting hardware to work with software.

I am just joking, Tom, I just saw that link after your post. I just realized there is a whole gamer world outside of the film world, that already overclocks, hacks etc with NVidia cards. Very interesting and new to me.

FYI, softmodding a GeForce card to use Quadro FX drivers does not work on GTX 2xx/4xx cards. G80-series GPUs were the last ones where softmodding worked as described by that Techarp article.

I'm fairly certain Nvidia took extra measures to protect higher-end Quadro FX cards from their gaming-oriented GeForce GTX cousins. After all, it would kill their expensive Quadro line if you could just mod a much cheaper GTX and have it perform like a Quadro. And perform like a Quadro they would, since they use the same GPUs.

Quadro CX & FX 4800 = GTX 260
FX 5800 = GTX 285

Compare the prices on these cards and feel that vein on your temple throb.

The hack seems to work well on my $100 GeForce 9800 GT. With GPU aceleration on, I threw five accelerated effects onto an 4k R3D timeline and my GPU barely broke 50% usage. Maybe there are greater gains with the faster cards when rendering full res? Hard to imagine even maxing out my $100 GPU at this rate, though.
