CPU vs. GPU speed

I've got a 2009 MacPro running 2x Quad-Core 2.4Ghz Xeon cpu's. I also have a ATI HD 5870 with 1GB RAM.

When encoding with Media Encoder CC, which would be faster? MPE Software only? Or MPE GPU (OpenCL)?

Just trying to optimize workflow until we have the budget to upgrade our GPU card...

Anyone? Basically, how much cpu power do you need before it overcomes the advantage of gpu MPE?

Adobe CC is going to be getting an upgrade with some of the features shown at NAB 2014, which includes GPU acceleration on export.

Should be later this month. Before June.

Easiest way to find out is do both and see which is faster. It's next to impossible to predict bottlenecks in random software.
