Counterfeit RED Lens PL Mounts.

RED provide a very good high quality product at an extremely low price for what you get. You would have to be a complete mug to buy counterfeit accessories of any kind.

Hell I feel dirty just using a another brand of lens support. (There was no RED alternative)

I hope RED will be able to take action against this sort of bull crap. But being its happening in China there is probably fuck all they can do.

I would actually like to be able to screw anything onto the front of the camera. Just saying if you would like to use a "pinhole lens" or strap your camera to a telescope then waiting around for red to approve your mount is a bit ridicules. On the other hand those cameras are so cheap and now also out of back order so if it breaks it might been worth the shot. just don't think the choice of lens mount should take out the warranty.

If you are shorting out the electronics, of course it can void the warranty.

BTW, what is a dumb PL mount? Other than the Canon mount, PL is always 'dumb', it just leaves the contacts open for the i/pins.

Replication is the highest form of flattery?

Well there seems to be some Chinese companies machining RED labelled camera PL mounts ( counterfeit ) .. needless to say they are total shit.. and we have been told they have been shorting out cameras and backfocus is so far off you can never get focus.

These will void your warranty. Buyer beware. If you don't want a RED mount, at least support the 3rd party companies that have mounts that are approved to not mess with your camera. It's not worth the pain.

In this case, it is not flattery, It is greed.

Chinese knock off's are a major problem in the worldwide marketplace. We have all seen the counterfeit HMI's and LED fixtures. The damage is multi-faceted. For the end user, you are paying for inferior merchandise with little if any recourse for correction. For the manufacturer, all of the work that went into R&D has been stolen. It costs jobs - in this case, American jobs.

If you use counterfeit products, it shows up in the results - it becomes the lowest common denominator - great camera + bad mount = inferior results.
BTW, same applies to the suggestion that one poster made suggesting counterfeit or repackaged SSD’s were a good idea. I’m sorry, but are you serious?

It’s not only the quasi third party retailers that pose the danger, it is the eventual flood of these knock-offs that get sold on E-Bay, Craigs List, etc. that muddy the waters. How do you trace the origin once it passes hands?

Sennheiser has been battling counterfeit operations originating out of China for years. Here is just one many references you can find about their efforts:
http://www.dealerscope.com/article/sennheiser-steps-up-counterfeit-battle/1

They aren’t the only ones - there are “too many to count” instances of intellectual theft. The cost is enormous.

It gets worse - hardware is one thing, electronics pose a greater danger - read this, posted just two days ago:

http://defensetech.org/2012/03/29/richard-clarke-all-u-s-electronics-from-china-could-be-infected/

Do you dismiss this as paranoia? Hardly. A couple of years ago, major retailers across the country were dismayed when they discovered that the digital photo frames they had sold all downloaded a program onto customer computers that sent private information to an off shore IP address.

The cyber attacks are continual - and getting more sophisticated. Last year, there were major breaches at top defense contractors traced back to China. There is some response taking place. Last May, the International Strategy for Cyberspace was unveiled. The plan states “the right to use all necessary means - diplomatic, informational, military and economic - as appropriate and consistent with international law” to defend the US and it’s allies. This is being taken seriously because it is a real danger.
It’s not only business - it is used to attack individuals - yes, real people. That same foreign government previously mentioned has used cyber technology to silence dissidents, journalists and political activists. Well documented and of course, denied at the highest levels.

Point is, just as purchasing drugs contributes to supporting terrorist organizations, purchasing counterfeit products damages our economic vitality and assists those that would seek to harm our way of life.

If the quality of your product isn’t of concern to you perhaps Jarred’s warning about voiding the warranty will have some impact.
If that’s not enough, re-read this post, do some research before you purchase. Maybe the impact will sink in. One can only hope.

The Red Ti PL mount looks as if there are plans for a future upgrade with the mostly blank circuit card on the rear. Certainly electronic Red lenses are on the horizon........maybe even very soon. My best guess. Maybe even before the Nikon electronic mount?

a mount without the circuit board on the back is what I would call a "dumb mount"

Today most PL mounts are dumb. The Red PL mount is considered not to be since it reads the lens data from certain lenses. It is, me guessing, also able to run a lens with internal motors in a not so distant future.

You can find a cheap dumb pl mount that works with epic and scarlet here: http://cinemods.com/

But I think Jarred is referring to something a little bit more advanced. A PL mount that hook up with the connectors for the lens data in out of the epic.

If they took the counter fitting one step further they could actually do a mount that used the canon interface and could then start to build lenses with PL that was controlled like EOS.... Red needs to hurry up with those electronic primes :)

edit: electronic anamorpic primes.... thats what I meant... :)

I asked JJ about this last year; if the forthcoming RED electronic mount would be a PL with extra contacts (similar to /i), or a new mount design from the ground up, incompatible with any other mount.

He replied that it would be the latter.

So you mean that he said that they will build a "red mount" to provide lens control?
It seems odd. but maybe there is a need for a bigger mount than PL if the sensor sizes are going to follow the road map.

Wait! I am confused! Companies like AllStar is approved with their universal mount and they have a PL adapter that attaches to their universal mount, is the approval includes their PL mount adapter?

Hi Jarred,
China not only copy PL mount, but also other accessories. How do you know the camera has been assembled un-approved equipment?
They told their customers to remember to remove their mount before they send back the camera to you for fix or upgrade.

Yes, exactly.

I saw the PL mount on the for sale section here last night. I can't believe they put "Red Digital Cinema" on the front cap!

off topic, but had a bit of a laugh with Brian's post and statement that purchasing drugs supports terrorist organizations....ok. hmmm. i guess the american media and politicians have done their job. Well done.

Johnny,

For what it is worth, I consider the cartels to be terrorist organizations.
Certainly you are somewhat aware of the fear and terror they have brought to the civilian population in Mexico with the recent killings?
I don't imagine those families finding anything funny about it.
A life is a life no matter where they are born.

Terrorism is a world-wide problem - never suggested that it was American centric only. Plenty of evidence out there besides that doled out in the media and by politicians.

As you pointed out, your response was off-topic to the intent of my post. We can agree to disagree on that particular sentence, but can we find common ground in that counterfeit RED gear is not good for any of us?

Installing ALLSTAR A-mount needs to take off RED's mount, and the Allstar universal mount contact the camera body, so it needs RED's test if the mount will damage the camera, and for approval for warranty. However, A-mount system lens adapters are added in front of the Universal mount, and no electronic parts, therefore, there is no problem about the adapter will damage the camera.
But I cannot answer you if the adapter should be approved by RED.

No it's true. Not just terrorists but also local street gangs.
