  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Could you please give me 1280X720 60P with no crop sensor?

The problem with the smaller frame size it's hard to get wider angles, and you end up with deeper depth of field.

However, if RED were to down-sample like other companies, it creates other problems. If the sensor line-skips (literally ignoring pixels from the sensor) it creates moire and other aberrations.

I would bet money, in amounts I don't have, that RED wouldn't utilize line-skipping, because of the visual aberrations that it causes.

So this means that Red Raw 1280x720 at 60 fps without a cropped sensor on Scarlet: won't happen.

You can shoot 2k and then down rez in post, but again, smaller sensor = more telephoto on every lens that you have.

Can the HDMI or SDI output at 60p? The standards certainly can, but is there the right circuitry behind the taps on the Scarlet to allow such a thing from just a firmware update? I have no idea. But I wouldn't sit around losing work, HOPING that RED will do something about it. It sucks, but you happen to be in a rare case that RED doesn't have covered. The simplest solution? Buy another camera that does what you clients need. If they need it as much as you say they do, then it'll pay for itself pretty quickly.

But a way around this is to use 16mm lenses, which are much wider, and usually very light and very fast (benefits of a small image circle)

This thread touches on a a valid point. Many people hope to see the day when Red cameras can scale down instead of crop when increasing fps. Technical hurdles aside, I am just offering an observation that seems to be echoed quite often. I know it will probably not happen with the current crop (couldn't resist that one) of cameras, but it would be nice.

I suspect to do this, you would need a board that scales down, and not an option.

However I would agree, I can't see any point in shooting 720p. I regret shooting a series in 720p a number of years ago. It a mistake that will cost me thousands of dollars in the long run.

Asking for 720p on a Red is like asking for an automatic transmission and parking assist on a ferrari.

There are a lot of factors in this situation.

Resolution is not everything, as is the larger sensor window effect is not changing that you are recording RAW.

Sony FS100 is capturing 4:2:0 AVCHD... it's not a professional format and at 720 even less compatible with modern broadcast cameras. A hacked Panasonic GH2 can record a AVC intra, 100mbs+...the new GH3 does 60p in a similar I-Frame format

Sony broadcast cameras are recording 2/3" sensor, which is smaller than the windowed Red Scarlet MX sensor and records at 10/12bit just the same... I believe the Sony FS100 is 8bit... the broadcast cameras Sony are 10/12-bit, Red isn't 12, it's 16-bit!

Real question is; if you were making the new Star Wars movies, would you shoot on a Sony Broadcast camera, or a Red Epic?
