  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Could you please give me 1280X720 60P with no crop sensor?

Please??
because that was the third long project this month my Scarlet lost for a 8bit sony F3.
Thank you.

Yes , at least, because DoPs prefered F3's 1280x720 60p over my scarlet's 2K croped.

yes i need , because here in Brasil . DoPs prefer this particular workflow whem the film runs for 60P.
im losing money.

If the Scarlet can do a 720/60p feed out of HD-SDI or HDMI (someone will have to check that, I'm not sure), you could conceivably use an external recorder to capture 720p using the full sensor area using one of the video outputs on your camera. DNxHD or ProRes deliverables out of the recorder depending on the capabilities of the individual unit.

Note that overcranking will not really be viable via offboard recorder given that you want a larger sensor area to draw the image from.

If that's not an option that will work, then it is what it is, no camera is perfect for all uses.

I doubt RED's current cameras are even capable of outputting full-frame downscaled resolutions in camera. The best you could do is go 2k/60fps to an external recorder with Look-Around area enabled which would be equivalent to 3k/60p @ 1080 or 720 (whatever your HDMI/SDI path output is set to.) That's a lot of workarounds just to get 720p/60, and even then, I'm not sure it would work.

This thread touches on a a valid point. Many people hope to see the day when Red cameras can scale down instead of crop when increasing fps. Technical hurdles aside, I am just offering an observation that seems to be echoed quite often. I know it will probably not happen with the current crop (couldn't resist that one) of cameras, but it would be nice.

camera company cant/wont change specs cuz of you are losing money..open a thread ask how many people prefers 2K to 720p..there ll be only few in a thousand

The request for a downsampled full sensor image is a valid one though. If it's possible for the camera to do it (I don't know if it is) then the value of effectively having a built-in hyperdeck shuttle would be a great benefit.

Yeah but sometimes the windowing is good. For example shooting at 2K gives 16mm lenses a whole new lease on life. So windowing ain't all bad.

You should of just shot 1080p at 60p and then used frame guides or just down rezzed in post. That seems like a reasonable solution

Simple answer - buy the camera that will get you the most work where you live...

I wish life and profession would be 10% of how simple your answer was.
But thats OK, it was just an ironic asking post , i will survive.
I know how to deal with this sensor crop in a narrative way.
And if i need 30 seconds of 60p with a 21mm in the midle of a short film , i would not downgrade my entire film because of that , wish the DoPs around here were thinking the same way.
But thats just me,
Thanks for feedback.

The problem with the smaller frame size it's hard to get wider angles, and you end up with deeper depth of field.

However, if RED were to down-sample like other companies, it creates other problems. If the sensor line-skips (literally ignoring pixels from the sensor) it creates moire and other aberrations.

I would bet money, in amounts I don't have, that RED wouldn't utilize line-skipping, because of the visual aberrations that it causes.

So this means that Red Raw 1280x720 at 60 fps without a cropped sensor on Scarlet: won't happen.

You can shoot 2k and then down rez in post, but again, smaller sensor = more telephoto on every lens that you have.

Can the HDMI or SDI output at 60p? The standards certainly can, but is there the right circuitry behind the taps on the Scarlet to allow such a thing from just a firmware update? I have no idea. But I wouldn't sit around losing work, HOPING that RED will do something about it. It sucks, but you happen to be in a rare case that RED doesn't have covered. The simplest solution? Buy another camera that does what you clients need. If they need it as much as you say they do, then it'll pay for itself pretty quickly.

Never noticed this before because I never shoot less than 4K. Looks like when in 4K mode, Look Around will show the 5K sensor view. But In lower resolutions, Look around does not show the whole screen, but the same percentage gain as when in 4K mode. So, yes you can set the SDI/HDMI to spit out 720 60p, and with look around you will gain a small increase in view. The external recorder like the Samurai will record 720 60p.
