Hey all,

First time poster and I appreciate any advice the Red guru's on here can throw my way. Basically I have been using the red mx for a long time and recently started using the epic. As a DP I primarily shoot commercials, and I have always just gone through various rental houses in La to pick up my camera package. With the great price of the scarlet I decided to take the plunge and build a camera package that I can sub rent to my clients on commercials I shoot.

Budget wise I'm planning on spending 20-22k max to build a conservative camera package that can easily go from sticks to hand held. I would like to keep it relatively small and light weight.

I'm currently planning on buying:
-Red scarlet with pl mount
-5in touch screen
-red mote
-2x 128g ssd cards

Where I get confused is, what hardware accessory mounts, and plates do I realistically need. So I guess my question is within my budget what mounts/plates do I need that will allow me to switch between a tripod setup and a hand held rig, and what mounts do I need to put rails on this camera so I can have a matte box, follow focus and a place to put a battery plate and some v locks.

Also do all of my rigging accessories need to come from from red? Is any other company out there that you guys can suggest making plates, and rail mounts that will be compatible with the scarlet so I can shop around a bit?

Basically to sum it up to those who don't want to read this whole post, if you were in my shoes with a budget of 20-22k what kind of rigging setup would you buy for this camera? What cheese plates do you like, rails, follow focus ect. The gear does not have to be made by red, I'm just trying to gather some information and opinions so I can build a rig for this camera that will be very universal.

Thanks so much for the advice,

Graham Robbins

I'm in the same boat. Does the bottom of the Epic/Scarlet have the same standard mounts/taps as a video and still camera? What are the cheapest third party options for power supply on the Epic? Sorry if this has been asked already been asked, the threads are moving sp quickly now that the Scarlet has been announced it is hard to keep up!

Yeah there are lots of options and I think most people are trying to figure it out as well. I think a lot of it would depend on what your style of shooting is. The main 3rd parties that I'm aware of are Innocinema, Viewfactor, Wooden Camera and Space Cam. There may be more but these are the ones I am aware of and am considering. I plan on keeping my Epic X on the lightweight side with a studio option. Good luck.

I'm also looking for a solution using the Manfrotto 577 QR Plate.

It would be the bomb-diggidy if this bit from Jag35 or this could be adapted to Scarlet (maybe with the WC Easy Riser) to get 15mm rails on at standard spacing.

Let's all of us send Jag35 an e-mail asking for a plate like the modular assault plate because that seems to be the linchpin for my rig.
