Hi all,

I'm currently looking to build a new system and would like to get peoples opinions on which CPU to go with.

I'm looking at the 5960x VS the 2697 v3. Obviously the Xeon costs significantly more, but it's got an additional 6 cores. The reason I put them side by side in my research is that they benchmark about the same in Geekbench and Passmark. 5960x can actually bench higher when overclocked. I'm more concerned with R3D decode than anything else as far as these CPU's are concerned. So more cores or a higher clock when it comes to R3D decode.

Thanks!

I believe the GPU is most important when it come's to decoding R3D. You're better off spending the extra $$$ on a high-end GPU as opposed to Xenon (which is pretty a dated architecture at this point).

I guess my terminology might be off. My question is which processor would provide better playback performance from Davinci Resolve using the Premium playback setting? Thanks

Dual xeon 2696v3 in supermicro x10 , msconfig Setting Max 64 core.i lose 8 core .
davinci resolve , timeline 4kuhd and monitor out 2160uhd on base 25 fps.
6k ws 5:1 Realtime full debayer
6k ws 4:1 23/24 fps Full debayer
6k 2.1 5:1 Realtime full debayer
6k FF 5:1/6:1 Realtime full debayer

You need a good card NVIDA 980 or ATI 390x or more .

From my experience the more cores the better for Red footage (I have not tested more than 24 physical cores).... That said you to need to balance with fast memory, medium to fast drive array and enough GPU grunt to debayer and scale.
